Diane von Furstenberg, in conversation with, jersey wrap dress, Victoria and Albert Museum

I recently had the pleasure of attending

a talk with designer Diane von Furstenberg in which she discussed

her remarkable career in conversation with Claudia Croft,

style editor of the Sunday Times (London).

The event was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

…

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the iconic wrap dress-

the garment created by Ms. von Furstenberg

which is a universal:  for every shape, for every size, for every woman.

Speaking at length, candidly and in detail, Ms. von Furstenberg

discussed a key individual who and a key determinant which

were of profound life influence:

1.  her mother,  a Holocaust-Auschwitz concentration camp survivor

who instilled in her daughter the steely power of fortitude and

2.  her set decision to be a self-sufficient woman

…

After her first marriage at 18 to German Prince Egon of Furstenberg,

she was styled Her Serene Highness Princess Diane of Furstenberg

Yet, she was never content to simply marry her prince and

live in golden bliss, happily ever after.

She studied, worked,  trained and eventually created a wardrobe masterpiece.

…

…

The immediate success in 1974, of her jersey wrap dress

and its lasting impact has established Ms. von Furstenberg

as one of fashion’s design greats.

Today, she oversees a thriving business concern.

Presently, Forbes magazine ranks Ms. von Furstenberg

as the 68th most powerful woman in the world.

She is also involved with several philanthropic projects.

…

At the conclusion of her conversation with journalist Claudia Croft,

Ms. von Furstenberg graciously answered queries.

I was struck by the focus of the questions posed and comments made.

All wanted to know more about how to become

a ‘Diane-type empowered woman’.

…

Ms. von Furstenberg’s design legacy is the wrap dress- for all women.

Her legacy of indelible spirit is also for all women.

It can be summed up in a statement

which she reiterated throughout the talk:

“I did not know what I wanted to do,

but I KNEW the woman I wanted to be.”

(image from dailymail.com):

DVF, thumbs up

DVF:  two thumbs up!

It appears that Ms. von Furstenberg achieved all she intended.

'Horst: Photographer of Style' - exhibition, fashion exhibitions 2014, fashion photography, Horst P. Horst, Mark your diary!, modernist photographers, photography - images in light/shadow, Victoria and Albert Museum

This autumn the Victoria and Albert Museum, London

presents a comprehensive exhibition on the oeuvre

of famed photographer Horst P. Horst, (1906 – 1999)

…

(image from vam.ac.uk):

…

German born, Horst studied in Hamburg and

after becoming increasingly absorbed by the

avant garde art movement, he moved to Paris.

There he undertook architectural study

under the tutelage of Le Corbusier.

…

Horst’s interest centred on a development of modernist expression.

Yet, his artistic interpretation was not to be fulfilled through

architecture, as was his initial ambition.  Horst became acquainted with renown

Vogue photographer, Baron George Hoyningen-Huene.

He became Hoyningen-Huene’s assistant and succumbed to the appeal

of photography, the art form through which he would eventually gain

international recognition.

…

Horst’s first photo credit appeared in French Vogue, 1931.

By 1932, with his photographs featured in British Vogue, Horst P. Horst was

on a career ascent.  The association with Vogue lasted his entire working life,

which spanned an impressive sixty years (1931 – 1991).

…

During the 1930s and 1940s he photographed

fashion luminaries such as Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli and

fashion model extraordinaire Lisa Fonssagrives.

Many of Hollywood glitterati, Betti Davis, Marlene Dietrich

and Ginger Rogers to name a few, were also subject of his work.

…

His images were composed from an eclectic array and combination of influences:

“His aesthetic range throughout the 1930s and (1940s) was vast, encompassing elements of Greek classicism, Baroque romanticism, Hollywood studio photography, trompe l’oeil, and film noir; he also ventured into the avant-garde, revealing such influences as the Bauhaus and Surrealism.”  (from vogue.com)

The photos created had a chiaroscuro quality of boldly contrasting light and

dark in an intricate play of shadow.  The effect produced was of profound

tonal aspect.

…

Horst immigrated to the United States and received his American

citizenship in 1943.  He would go on to serve in the U.S. army,

working as a photographer.

He photographed the then President of the United States Harry S. Truman.

and was granted the distinct honour of photographing

every post-war U. S.  First Lady.

…

In the later part of his career, he photographed famed rockers of the

music scene:  Duran Duran and Mike Jagger.

His love of his art was simply an expression of his love of life.  He once stated,

“I like taking photographs, because I like life.

(and) I love photographing people best of all,

because most of all I love humanity.”

Current exhibition:   The Anatomy of a Suit

(image from museumoflondon.org.uk):

As the capital gets set to celebrate men’s fashion with London Collections: Men, we unpick the secrets of the suit with a free display in the Sackler Hall. Using historical suit jackets from markets across the capital, we’ve dissected a selection of historical jackets in order to trace the technical genius lurking underneath the suit’s surface.

Previous research into the suit has at times overlooked the fact that it is a feat of engineering, with the ability to transform the body. Since the secrets of the suit are hidden on the inside, it’s easy to see why. It’s only through deconstructing the suit jacket and turning it inside out that we can bring its technical genius to the fore.

The Museum of London

Current exhibition:   The Cheapside Hoard: London’s Lost Jewels

(image from ibtauris.com):

A major exhibition investigating the secrets of the Cheapside Hoard. This extraordinary and priceless treasure of late 16th and early 17th century jewels and gemstones – displayed in its entirety for the first time in over a century – was discovered in 1912, buried in a cellar on Cheapside in the City of London.

Through new research and state-of-the-art technology, the exhibition will showcase the wealth of insights the Hoard offers on Elizabethan and Jacobean London – as a centre of craftsmanship and conspicuous consumption, at the crossroads of the Old and New Worlds. It will also explore the mysteries that remain, lost among the cataclysmic events of the mid-17th century: who owned the Hoard, when and why was it hidden, and why was it never reclaimed? –

fashion exhibitions 2014, Victoria and Albert Museum, wedding dresses, Wedding Dresses: 1775 - 2014, wedding-wear

The Victoria and Albert Museum (V and A) , London

will present an exhibition, which chronicles

the white wedding dress as signature garment

( from 18th century to present-day )

and its design interpretations by

leading creatives and couture houses:

from Charles Worth and Norman Hartnell

to Vivienne Westwood and Vera Wang

(to name but a few).

…

White as wedding dress ‘it colour’

In Western culture, white has evolved as

colour appropriate for the bridal dress.

It is widely believed that this stemmed from interpretation

of white as colour symbol of purity.

Blue was originally regarded as the colour of purity;

hence brides once wore blue on their wedding day.

…

The convention of white for the bridal dress

commenced with the 1840 marriage of Queen Victoria to

her ‘prince charming’ Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

…

(image from en.wikipedia):

Royal Couple

The bride, Queen Victoria and groom, Prince Albert

…

With the mass production advances of the

Industrial Revolution, the skills of trained artisans

were no longer in high demand.

Queen Victoria wore white on her special day as

a sign of support for the economically waning

lace industry in England.

White was believed the best colour

to showcase her intricate lace-work dress.

…

As the bride of her time to copy,

wealthy ladies choose hand-worked, white dresses

to be ‘queen of the day’ for their wedding occasion.

…

White was already regarded as a colour choice of the wealthy.

As it was easily soiled/dirtied, the financially less-off

could ill afford a garment in white –

of which repeat use was limited.

Only the extremely well-off could afford the luxury

of a bespoke garment and particularly one in white.

…

Over 80 garments will be on display at the V and A exhibition

from the expected white to the unexpected blast of colour.

…

Here comes the bride,

all dressed in white … or not

The bride:  Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll

whose ill-fated marriage to the 11th Duke of Argyll ended in

a  highly-publised ’60s divorce case of sex, scandal

more sex, more scandal (you get the picture …)

…

Th exhibition will offer insights into the dresses and the wearers,

setting the garments into historical and personal context.

…

Whether a wedding-wear traditionalist or

an avant-garde fashion explorer

this  V and A  exhibition is set to delight

visitors with an impressive array of dresses

from various epochs and varied design perspectives.

autumn/winter 2013, Jonathan Saunders, Jonathan Saunders - a/w 2013, Jonathan Saunders interviewed by Lou Stoppard, Lou Stoppard, Victoria and Albert Museum, Vogue Fashion Festival - 2013

Award winning Scottish designer

Jonathan Saunders

who this year celebrates his 10th year anniversary in fashion –

spoke candidly about his career:

initial stages, struggles, highlights, inspirations, aspirations

in interview with fashion journalist Lou Stoppard at the

Victoria and Albert Museum , London.

Fashion designer Jonathan Saunders

at interview with journalist Lou Stoppard

 …

Witty

Charming

Engaging

with  just that bit of

Cheeky    Potty- mouth   Good naturedness

Jonathan reflected on his early years

as student and fashion industry newbie.

…

He studied product and printed textile design at the

Glasgow School of Art and was always

fascinated by the emotive power of colour.

He intended to undertake an MA course at the Royal College of Art

but instead pursued graduate work at

Central St. Martins College of Art and Design  (CSM)  –

a decision which was to set him on an incredible trajectory.

…

He recalled the important day of his entrance interview

arriving at CSM, noting the fashion parade of students

and there was he

“… looking like a tramp and nearly s—-ing himself … “

Yet without ever having planned on a career in fashion

he accepted the offer from CSM.

…

He immediately felt a bit out of his depth:

“(having been) involved in furniture (design) suddenly

involved with the human body was challenging.”

Though experiencing a sense of being thrown into the deep end

he didn’t sink

but floated instead

then swam.

…

He credits CSM with encouraging him

“… to form an opinion, to have a point of view …

 to have a critical eye … “

…

He continued to develop his skill for colour use and

screen printing during a time when

“print wasn’t on people’s wavelength.”

Clearly a risk-taker, a forward-thinker

he held fast to his ‘print’ point of view,

which later was the making of his success.

…

Graduating in 2002 and at only 24 years old

and truly a relative fashion ingenue –

Jonathan’s first collection made the cover of British Vogue.

He believes that his “naivete maybe sparked a note with people.”

He suggests that, “fashion people liked me (because) at the time

my clothing was accessible.”

…

Although greeted with almost instantaneous high praise,

Jonathan was troubled by the dilemma of

“being a brand and wanting to try new things …

(it is) finding the right balance between (satisfying) the customer

and (satisfying) your expression as a designer.”

…

This lead to a process of knowledge acquisition:

of self,  of concept,  of language

What was it that he wanted his clothes to communicate?

As Jonathan eloquently stated,

“fashion is a story to tell, a feeling …”

…

To accomplish further how to write his own

fashion language and support it,

practicalities need to be considered.

He worked gratis for Pucci, Christian LaCroix, Alexander McQueen

“…to just learn…

how the industry works,

how (to build) a viable business …

how to (move) from a tiny bedroom operation

to being a company.”

And all this he did.

…

Today Jonathan Saunders is an

internationally renown fashion designer.

For several years he showed in New York but is now happily back

showing his collections at London Fashion Week.

He is known for his unique and innovative use of

colour, print and traditional methods of silk screening.

He states,

“I’m a colourist (using) colour to tell a story and have

the consumer(s) interpret it in their own way …

clashing (colours) gets me excited … colour exists already

(it is) how to combine colours (to make)

a new colour palette.”

…

Although technology can afford him

inventive methods of creating his textiles,

Jonathan still uses a traditional method of silk screening.

He finds, “a joy in the mistakes of (things) slightly crude.”

It seems a distinct and wonderful quality of beauty in

the perfection of imperfection

of which he greatly appreciates.

His fashion philosophy rests comfortably with

the organic, the natural, the fundamentals.

…

What’s next for Jonathan?

Further collaborations?

… only if there is something new to learn from the partnership.

…

New textiles?

… he tries to create a new textile each season.

…

Words of wisdom?

he states:

“… none of us really know what we’re doing.”

…

I’d  heard Jonathan speak at interview before –

at the Vogue Fashion Festival 2013.

I liked him then and like him now …

even more.

…

a pearl created

A pearl is formed when a mollusc detects

a foreign substance  inside its shell

(from natural parasite or human introduction).

The animal then forms layers of nacre around the irritant.

Nacre is solid, luminous, iridescent

and is noted in an array of colours –

hence the variety of hues, which can be produced.
