Horiyoshi III

is the celebrated Japanese master tattoo artist

who specialises in creating full body tattoos or suits known as

‘Irezumi’.

Born in 1946 and birth named Yoshihito Nakano-

the artist styles himself as

Horiyoshi III

in honour of his late mentor, Horiyoshi I.

Using traditional Japanese tattoo imagery of

– fauna (particularly tigers, snakes, exotic birds, koi fish)

– mythological beasts (Asian dragon, Fu-Dog, the Phoenix)

– flora (lotus, peony, chrysanthemum, cherry blossom)

– Kabuki iconography from classical Japanese theater,

Horiyoshi III designs intricate/ornate ‘Irezumi’ (full body tattoo)

a painful and lengthy process, numbering several years.

Yet, the result is certainly awe-inspiring.

In 2009

Steve Yuk, a client of Horiyoshi III

proposed establishing a fashion line of

menswear and womenswear

based on the elegant work of the master tattoo artist.

The following year

the Horiyoshi III clothing label was launched.

Like her internationally renown parent,

Ms. Feu leans towards

a black / white colour palette

an agender attitude (androgynous dress)

oversized / loose fit garments

elements of architectural contours

In addition, her aesthetics incorporates an urban infused vibe

a generous injection of urban-chic sass,

the occasional hint of subdued colour and/or pattern and

a “free to be me” style comment.

MFW, s/s 2015: the Fausto Puglisi collection

'60s fashion - inspired, fashion bling, Fausto Puglisi, gladiator sandals, graphic prints, Milan Fashion Week, sliders, spring/summer 2015, urban style

I am a fan of Italian designer, Fausto Puglisi.

His ‘bells and whistles’ approach may be OTT for some,

but I do admire the extreme exuberance he brings to

his creations.

…

(image from marieclaire.it):

Fausto-Puglisi_ portrait from maireclaire.itmain_image_object

designer, Fausto Puglisi

…

His work was showcased at the recent exhibition,

The Glamour of Italian Fashion 1945 – 2014

held at the Victoria and Albert Museum (London).

Sr. Puglisi is one to watch of the

next generation of Italian fashion talent.

…

He continues to grow and to explore:

fine tuning conflicting perspectives of creating

bling things with urban edge, which holds appeal

for a select audience with

the reality of designing for a wider demographics

in order to sustain a business.

…

Putting the practicalities aside,

Sr. Puglisi is a design showman and I for one want a front row seat.

…

For the s/s 2015 collection presented opening day at MFW,

there was no shortage of ideas, running the gamut:

from ’60s mod to contemporary urban sass,

from gold high shine to graphic prints

and some others in between.

…

I am love stuck on the shoes.  Sr. Puglisi brought the ‘bling thing’ factor

to slides and gladiator sandals.

'90s hip hop fashion influence, autumn/winter 2013, CFDA, Council of Fashion Designers of America, Dao-Yi Chow, Maxwell Osborne, menswear, New York urban fashion, Public School, Swarovski Menswear Designer of the Year Award, urban style

Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne

(image from nytimes.com):

the designer duo behind menswear fashion label

Public School

scooped the

Swarovski Menswear Designer of the Year Award

for their autumn/winter 2013 collection.

The award was bestowed by the

Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).

CFDA awards are the Oscars of the fashion industry;

an accolade to excellence.

…

Chow and Osborne are both native New Yorkers whose

entry into fashion design was influenced by other factors.

During his final two years at New York University (NYU)

Chow interned for Sony Records.

His ambition was to  work in the music industry.

He grew up listening and loving  ’90s hip hop tunes.

After completing his university studies he worked as a journalist,

writing for Blaze and Vibe magazines.

For Chow, “music was essentially (his) introduction to fashion.”

He was drawn to the style and imagery

projected by hip hop music artists,

whose novel sound and novel attire commanded attention:

urban

unique

attitude

…

Osborne’s road to fashion also had its detours.

He attended art school then law school,

but neither was the right fit.

While working as a sales associate at Tommy Hilfiger

he became intrigued with clothes.

He interned at Sean John, the clothing label owned by

music mogul P. Diddy.

While there, Osborne learned a great deal about the

business of running a successful fashion label.

…

Chow and Osborne meet when both were with Sean John.

They established a design/business partnership and in 2008

launched their label, Public School:

a menswear clothing line,

 interpretive of their NYC upbringing.
