The call for independence was officially proclaimed and

established the foundation of a nation based on the

principals of ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ of its citizenry.

Although in words a perfect beginning,

throughout its history the U. S. government has been challenged

by citizen groups who had to fight and eventual win

recognition of their civil liberties as guaranteed under the law.

These modern ‘freedom fighters’ of civil rights on issues of

race,  gender,  sexual orientation

evoked the tenets of an 18th century document

to support their grievances
