Meet … the fabulous Andre Leon Talley (A.L.T.)

A.L.T. has penned a wonderfully informative, photograph- filled book

chronicling the origin of the LBD (little black dress) and its

varied re-interpretations by contemporary designers.

…

This new tome by Mr. Talley, appropriately entitled, Little Black Dress

accompanies the exhibition, by the same title, which premiered at

the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Museum.

The show has travelled to Paris and is now at

The Bismarck American Centre for Art and Culture.

Mr. Talley, a trustee of SCAD, curated both exhibits.

…

The book and exhibition pays homage to the LBD as the garment of

simplicity, elegance, versatility, accessibility – a signature of dress perfection.

Credited as the creation of fashion visionary, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1926) –

the LBD is a wardrobe essential,

which continues to evolve.

LBD Highlights

The original LBD:   Coco Chanel designs a “garconne-style”

practical day dress (1926).  American Vogue accurately predicts

” (the dress will be) the frock that all the world will wear”

It was dubbed ‘Chanel’s Ford Dress’ after the Ford motorcar, which was

in great demand and came only in black, due to paint supply difficulties.

What was initially a design for practical-wear

has become a high-statement garment of continual

aesthetic innovative revisions …

as such embracing the spirit of

Coco Chanel’s design philosophy.

opens an exciting new exhibition

The exhibition highlights the London club scene –

nightspots of fashion on parade

which fuelled the creative energy of

the emerging fashion talents of the decade.

Art students flocked to these vibrant venues,

inspired by music heard and dress observed.

They challenged previous fashion sensibilities and

in turn contributed significantly to the rise of

London as a leading fashion capital.

Creations by John Galliano, Betty Jackson, Wendy Dagworthy,

Katherine Hamnett and Stephen Jones, among others are featured.

Little Black Dress

organised by the Savannah College of Art and Design/Museum

and curated by American Vogue contributing editor, Andre Leon Tally.

interpretations of this classic garment.
