After existing in relative obscurity for the past few years,

controversial fashion designer John Galliano

has been named recently as the new creative director of

Belgian label Maison Martin Margiela.

…

In 2011, the Gibraltar born, Central Saint Martins educated,

Paris based designer was summarily dismissed

from his position as creative director of fashion house Christian Dior

for  vicious anti-Semitic and racist remarks,

made in a Parisian cafe and directed towards fellow diners.

The incident was video-taped and presented in a Parisian court,

where the designer was charged and later received a suspended sentence.

…

At the time, Mr. Galliano had been with Dior for 15 years.

The LVHM group which owns the Dior brand cited a

“zero-tolerance policy”  on acts/language of racism and anti-Semitism.

The company quickly moved to sever

its relationship with the disgraced designer.

With a Court issued suspended sentence

and a fashion industry issued suspended sentence,

it seemed unlikely that Galliano creations would be seen

any time soon on a Parisian runway.

…

Yet, but a mere three years hence and Renzo Rosso,  president of

Only the Brave Group, which owns fashion labels Maison Martin Margiela,

Marni, Viktor & Rolf as well as jeans brand Diesel,

has decided to offer Galliano a reprieve by appointing him

creative director of the innovative label Maison Martin Margiela (MMM).

MMM has been without a designated head since

the retirement in 2009 of its founder Martin Margiela.

…

While Galliano was all flash and flamboyance:

never camera shy,  but camera seeker;

Margiela was reserved and reticient:

rarely seen and rarely interviewed.

…

The consummate showman

…

It would seem that Mr. Russo, who is a great admirer of Galliano’s work, is

a staunch believer in second chances.  In his announcement of Galliano

as the new creative head of MMM,

Russo is enthused with abundant praise, stating:

“John Galliano is one of the greatest, undisputed talents of all time;  (a) unique, exceptional courtier for a Maison that always challenged and innovated the world of fashion. I look forward to his return to create that Fashion Dream that only he can create.” (forbeslife.com).

Mr.  Russo sees Galliano as the future of Maison Martin Margiela and of fashion,

he states:

“This appointment marks a new era in the history of the Maison.”

He went on to describe Galliano as “a visionary and non-conformist”.  (dailmail.com)

…

No one can neither doubt nor fault the creative genius of Mr. Galliano’s collective

oeuvre.  While at Christian Dior, his runway shows were hotly anticipated and he

rarely, if ever disappointed.

However, his comments in 2011 more than disappointed.

The words were not those of a “visionary or non-conformist”,

but those of a reactionary.

…

Mr.  Galliano has since undergone treatment for substance abuse concerns.

Were his words uttered while under the influence?

Or something stemming from a darker place?

…

Does one now separate the measure of the man from the measure of his talent?

It’s been done before:   time after time after time.

… and the accolades continue as

Lupita Nyong’o

receives yet another honour as

People’s Magazine Most Beautiful Person,

the cover feature of the current issue.

~

Not always convinced of her incredible physical allure,

Ms. Nyong’o once believed that the ideal image of physical attractiveness,

was that which was the polar opposite of herself, which she defined as:

~

“Light skin and long, flowing, straight hair.”

 “Subconsciously you start to appreciate

those things more than what you possess.”

~

It was her mother who continually told her that she was beautiful.

“And I finally believed her at some point.”, stated Ms. Nyong’o.

~

Ms. Nyong’o is humble in her acknowledgment of the praise

bestowed by the weekly magazine:

~

“It is exciting and just a major, major compliment.”

“I was happy for all the girls who would see me on [it]

and feel a little more seen.”

…  so eloquently stated, Ms. Nyongo.

In the Beginning:

For over fifty years

the  production of iconic footwear brand

Doc Martens

has been managed by the Griggs,

a prominent British cobbler family from Northhamptonshire.

…

The design and functionality of Doc Martens

was the brainchild of two German inventors-

Dr.  Martens and Dr. Funck.

In the 1950s, they partnered with the Griggs family

uniting an innovative shoe concept

with the know how of shoe manufacturing.

…

(image from creative match.com):

…

Originally, a simple black leather lace up boots with

thick rubber soles and yellow stitching,

designed for work comfort –

the collaboration would give rise to  shoe wear

which came to symbolise:

a self expression, tied to a group identification

challenging the status quo.

During the 1980s wearing Docs

singled the wearer as

‘free to be me’.

…

Docs became the shoe wear for those of

 counter-culture, anti-establishment sentiments.

…

 Peter Townsend

songwriter and guitarist of the rock band ‘Who’

was  credited with the christening of

the shoe as “rebellious cool”

when, as legend goes …

After performing in concert,

he went to bed exhausted  with

only a bottle of cognac in hand and Docs on his feet.

(You get the visuals.)

…

Docs were the

marching shoes of various

 ‘styled tribes’

whose attire were expressions

of their demand to introduce a new social agenda.

…

(image from articles.latimes.com)

…

Punks,  Goths,  Grunge,

Mods,  Britpop,   Glam rockers

all paid sartorial homage to the label.

…

Docs have now become mainstream.

In addition to the original Black leather boot and yellow stitching

there are various shapes, colours, patterns

from which to choose.

They are a statement maker for the wearer

…

Simply,

Docs are required footwear for those

who are cool, with an irreverent bit of edge.

Fashion News Flash:

The End of the Old

The Start of the New

On Thursday, 24 October 2013

the Griggs family concluded a deal with

private equity firm Permira, which

saw the Dr. Martens concern sold

for 300 million pounds.

…

Perimra hopes to continue with brand expansion

into the Chinese retail market and a initiation

of a children’s wear range.

…

What’s next for the Doc?

Hopefully continued innovation, which

manages to stay true to what the

label has come to represent …

trying something new

without sacrificing what is

tried and true

…

Watch/Listen:   a brief history and commentaries from

aficionados of  the Doc Martens shoe
