This autumn the Victoria and Albert Museum, London

presents a comprehensive exhibition on the oeuvre

of famed photographer Horst P. Horst, (1906 – 1999)

…

German born, Horst studied in Hamburg and

after becoming increasingly absorbed by the

avant garde art movement, he moved to Paris.

There he undertook architectural study

under the tutelage of Le Corbusier.

…

Horst’s interest centred on a development of modernist expression.

Yet, his artistic interpretation was not to be fulfilled through

architecture, as was his initial ambition.  Horst became acquainted with renown

Vogue photographer, Baron George Hoyningen-Huene.

He became Hoyningen-Huene’s assistant and succumbed to the appeal

of photography, the art form through which he would eventually gain

international recognition.

…

Horst’s first photo credit appeared in French Vogue, 1931.

By 1932, with his photographs featured in British Vogue, Horst P. Horst was

on a career ascent.  The association with Vogue lasted his entire working life,

which spanned an impressive sixty years (1931 – 1991).

…

During the 1930s and 1940s he photographed

fashion luminaries such as Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli and

fashion model extraordinaire Lisa Fonssagrives.

Many of Hollywood glitterati, Betti Davis, Marlene Dietrich

and Ginger Rogers to name a few, were also subject of his work.

His images were composed from an eclectic array and combination of influences:

“His aesthetic range throughout the 1930s and (1940s) was vast, encompassing elements of Greek classicism, Baroque romanticism, Hollywood studio photography, trompe l’oeil, and film noir; he also ventured into the avant-garde, revealing such influences as the Bauhaus and Surrealism.”  (from vogue.com)

The photos created had a chiaroscuro quality of boldly contrasting light and

dark in an intricate play of shadow.  The effect produced was of profound

tonal aspect.

…

Horst immigrated to the United States and received his American

citizenship in 1943.  He would go on to serve in the U.S. army,

working as a photographer.

He photographed the then President of the United States Harry S. Truman.

and was granted the distinct honour of photographing

every post-war U. S.  First Lady.

…

In the later part of his career, he photographed famed rockers of the

music scene:  Duran Duran and Mike Jagger.

His love of his art was simply an expression of his love of life.  He once stated,

“I like taking photographs, because I like life.

(and) I love photographing people best of all,

because most of all I love humanity.”

Museum Folkwang (Essen, Germany) |

Karl Lagerfeld – Parallel Contrasts:  Photography – Books  – Fashion

Closes:   11 May 2014

For over 50 years, Karl Lagerfeld has enjoyed great success as a fashion designer. As Creative Director for CHANEL (since 1981) and FENDI (since 1965) he has become one of the most important players in the international fashion world, but has also gained fame as an astute and sharp-tongued aphorist of the everyday. During this period, Lagerfeld has also worked for other fashion houses and launched sensational collections under his own name. Since 1975, alongside fashion, he has been designing jewellery, furniture, musical instruments, books and toys and, in cooperation with musicians, directors and architects, opera and theatre costumes, stage sets and architecture. Karl Lagerfeld is more of a snapshot than a retrospective, showing the man’s seemingly boundless creative energy in all its facets: fashion, drawings and photographs, films and books, product design, advertising.

The exhibition Halston and Warhol: Silver and Suede examines the interconnected lives and creative practices of Andy Warhol and Halston – two American icons who had a profound impact on the development of 20th century art and fashion. Organized by The Andy Warhol Museum and Lesley Frowick (the niece of Halston), the exhibition integrates Halston’s garments and accessories with photography, video and paintings by Warhol.

Fashion in Fiction

Closes  6 April 2014

From the pages of classic literature comes the Charleston Museum’s latest exhibition Fashion in Fiction. It explores the fundamental role clothing and style play in some of our most beloved works of fiction. From Jane Austen’s sprigged muslin dresses to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s swinging flappers and dapper gents, fashion often becomes integral to a story and even helps to fix it to a particular time in history. Using clothing and accessories from their historic textiles collection as well as books and illustrations from the Archives, the Charleston Museum offers a light-hearted look at popular 19th and early 20th century fashions and shows off styles brought to life by some of literature’s most memorable characters.

Fashion Flashback: 1970s

Closes 27 April 2014

Fashion Flashback: 1970s  showcases everything from flower power patterns and paisley prints to the structured polyester leisure suit. This decade was a flamboyant period for fashion and style, full of often outrageous trends. Like other elements of 1970s pop culture, clothing was fraught with contradictions and extremes. Some styles reflected a romantic, nostalgic view of the past while others created a sharp, almost harsh vision of the future.

 Bill Cunningham: Façades
Closes 15 June 2014

In 1968, photographer Bill Cunningham embarked on an eight-year project to document the architectural riches and fashion history of New York City. Scouring the city’s thrift stores, auction houses, and street fairs for vintage clothing, and scouting sites on his bicycle, Cunningham generated a photographic essay entitled Façades, which paired models—in particular his muse, fellow photographer Editta Sherman—in period costumes with historic settings. The photographer donated 88 silver gelatin prints from the series to the New-York Historical Society in 1976, and now, almost four decades later, Bill Cunningham: Façades highlights the historical perspective the photographs suggest—not just of the distant past, but of the particular time in which they were created.

Bill Cunningham (b. 1929) is a fashion photographer for The New York Times.  He is known for his candid photos and has called himself a ‘street photographer’,  probably the pioneer of this genre of fashion imagery.

There is still time to visit the exhibition

Out of the Box:  The Rise of Sneaker Culture

at the Bata Shoe Museum – Toronto, Canada

…

The show chronicles sneaker history and the emergence

of the sneaker as a 21st century

shoe-wear staple.

…

In the latter part of the 18th century,

plimsolls,  a very basic rubber soled shoes, made their appearance.

This early sneaker was not of comfort or fashion worth.

Circa 1892, the U. S. Rubber Company created a

more comfy rubber soled footwear with a canvas top –

Keds sneakers had arrived.

…

The name sneaker was used as the shoes made hardly any sound,

so a someone wearing them could “sneak” up another person.

By 1917, the sneakers popularity had skyrocketed.

In the same year, Converse produced a sneaker just

for playing basketball – the Converse All Stars.

In 1923, basketball player Chuck Taylor endorsed the shoes

and they became known as Chuck Taylor – All Stars –

the best-selling basketball shoes to date.

…

Sneakers hit the world market in 1924 when a German designer

Adi Dassler created a sneaker and named it after

himself … Adidas.

Olympic track great Jesse Owens won four gold medals

wearing Adidas footwear at the 1936 Olympic Games.

…

Adi Dassler wasn’t the only one in his family

interested in designing/manufacturing rubber soled shoes.

His brother Rudi Dassler started the sports shoe company – Puma.

…

Today, sneakers are technological footwear marvels.

For on the court action – designed for comfort, durability, athleticism

For off court style – crafted for urban fashion game.

Sneakers have ‘sneaked’ into top scorer as a sartorial statement maker –

and have become an element of a signature look.

…

Who doesn’t own a pair, two or more?!

…

Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture

Closes March 30, 2014

…

Bata Shoe Museum (Toronto, Canada)

http://www.batashoemuseum.ca/

The exhibition explores the history of the sneaker from the 19th century through to today. Out of the Box is the first exhibition in North America to showcase the history of sneaker culture and features over 120 sneakers representing the past 150 years. Highlighting iconic sneakers from the 20th and 21st centuries, Museum visitors have the opportunity to explore the historical beginnings of the sneaker from its emergence in the 19th century to becoming one of the most democratic forms of footwear in the 20th century to its current position as status symbol and icon of urban culture.

The Victoria and Albert Museum (V and A) , London

will present an exhibition, which chronicles

the white wedding dress as signature garment

( from 18th century to present-day )

and its design interpretations by

leading creatives and couture houses:

from Charles Worth and Norman Hartnell

to Vivienne Westwood and Vera Wang

(to name but a few).

…

White as wedding dress ‘it colour’

In Western culture, white has evolved as

colour appropriate for the bridal dress.

It is widely believed that this stemmed from interpretation

of white as colour symbol of purity.

Blue was originally regarded as the colour of purity;

hence brides once wore blue on their wedding day.

…

The convention of white for the bridal dress

commenced with the 1840 marriage of Queen Victoria to

her ‘prince charming’ Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

…

With the mass production advances of the

Industrial Revolution, the skills of trained artisans

were no longer in high demand.

Queen Victoria wore white on her special day as

a sign of support for the economically waning

lace industry in England.

White was believed the best colour

to showcase her intricate lace-work dress.

…

As the bride of her time to copy,

wealthy ladies choose hand-worked, white dresses

to be ‘queen of the day’ for their wedding occasion.

…

White was already regarded as a colour choice of the wealthy.

As it was easily soiled/dirtied, the financially less-off

could ill afford a garment in white –

of which repeat use was limited.

Only the extremely well-off could afford the luxury

of a bespoke garment and particularly one in white.

…

Over 80 garments will be on display at the V and A exhibition

from the expected white to the unexpected blast of colour.

…

Here comes the bride,

all dressed in white … or not

In 2011, Ms. Stefani donated her dress to the V and A.

…

The bride:  Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll

whose ill-fated marriage to the 11th Duke of Argyll ended in

a  highly-publised ’60s divorce case of sex, scandal

more sex, more scandal (you get the picture …)

…

Th exhibition will offer insights into the dresses and the wearers,

setting the garments into historical and personal context.

…

Whether a wedding-wear traditionalist or

an avant-garde fashion explorer

this  V and A  exhibition is set to delight

visitors with an impressive array of dresses

from various epochs and varied design perspectives.
