Surprise! Surprise! Suprise! : Yohji Yamamoto, a/w 2014

autumn/winter 2014, colour/print inspiration, gender-less fashion, menswear - bold accents, oversizing, Yohji Yamamoto

Black is signature colour for designer Yohji Yamamoto,

(image from vogue.fr):

yohji_yamamoto vogue.fr__9695_north_380x

whose clothing seem the product of

contemplative calm and dress freedom created by:

gender-less identification:  silhouettes which suit both men and women

deconstruction:  a shift away from “perfect fashion”

over-sizing:  the big is beautiful factor

minimalist:  low-key / tranquil aspect

a succinct summing up of the aesthetics expressed by

a typical Yohji Yamamoto collection.

…

For his menswear  a/w  2014 offering

Mr. Yamamoto veers, in bold measure,

from his traveled design path and follows a road of

colour vibrancy, print, sharper tailoring and fit.

Yet, elements of the Yamamoto essence are in evidence:

layering, voluminousness, gender non-specific fashion .

…

This combination of fashion factors:  the unexpected and the expected

 resulted in a vivacious collection.

The element of design surprise intrigues.

I wonder what’s to be “expected” next , or not

from one of my favourite creatives

Yohji Yamamoto

More than a hint of colour: Yohji Yamamoto, PFW – a/w 2014

The master of asymmetry, voluminous layering,  Zen-like clothing and

black as statement colour –

Yohji Yamamoto

(image from wwd.com):

offers a collection of colour and print vibrancy,

 a graffiti-esque,  painterly quality

which remains true to the expected of

Mr. Yamamoto’s design aesthetics.

…

The pieces were of exaggerated proportions –

larger than life,

so to the imagery of the prints.

…

Some prints seem reminiscent of a Hieronymus Bosch painting –

though not based on interpreting a narrative of a Bosch work, rather

capturing the intent:

on style … chaos, frenetic energy

on manner … fantastical

on scale … abstract/unreal

…

The Garden of Earthly Delights (detail) 1503/04

…

(image from everyhistory.org):

Last Judgement (detail) 1504-1508

 by Hieronymus Bosch

…

There appears also elements of surrealism akin to Salvador Dali:

(image from tufts.edu):

painting, the persistence of memory, dali

The Persistence of Memory (1931) by Salvador Dali

…

Mr. Yamamoto also features knitwear in this collection,

which he has presented in the past –

and to a similar effect:  body conscious and inventive.

…

Yet it is the liberal use of colour and

the manner in which it translates, which provokes/intrigues.

The intense use colour and imagery ignites

new discussion on Yohji Yamamoto’s design philosophy.

draw steady inspiration from bright and bold colours-

evocative of their East Indian heritage.

True to their design aesthetics, the S/S 2013 collection is

a glorious pyrotechnic display:

fashion fire art.

The use of digital print on metallic fabric with intricate embellishments

gives further depth and dimension to the collection.

Contrast this rich colour commotion with simple, elegant silhouettes and

as with any fireworks presentation, the collection captivates attention.

Falguni & Shane is a go to label for many of the music industry’s

fashion divas extraordinaires:  Katie Perry, Nicki Minaj, Fergie, Lady Gaga …

so creating singular, edgy, statement wear is a forte.

The S/S 2013 collection proves their design versatility.

The excitement of colour and print is in evidence,

yet there are pieces of classic forms:   signature, wearable, delightful.

Chanel Spring 2013

It’s no secret-  I absolutely adore print design. So this Chanel suit, certainly arrested my attention.  The subtle red/blue geometric pattern, large blue collar,  blue trim (to sleeves, jacket hem) and pattern/colour contrast of jacket and dress is pure Chanel understated elegance … another Lagerfeld design success. And yes – the statement fingerless gloves, simply  in red.
