Soul Train

…

A native Chicagoan, Don Cornelius was born in 1936.

He  aspired to a career in broadcasting

and realised his ambition when in 1966

he landed a job as an announcer and disc jockey at a local radio station.

He later conceived the idea of a television programme

to serve as a platform for established and rising Black recording artists.

…

In 1971, Mr.  Cornelius launched Soul Train on a Chicago t.v. channel.

He moved production to Los Angeles

and the show quickly went into national syndication.

Viewers eagerly clamoured to board the Soul Train.

…

The show exported Black music to an enthusiastic viewing audience

both in the United States and around the world.

It became integral to the music and fashion scene of the ’70s and beyond.

Commencing with the inaugural show in 1971,

Mr Cornelius would serve as producer and host for the next 22 years.

The Soul Train show continued on air for an amazing 35 years in total.

It was one of the longest running syndicated shows in U. S. television history.

…

Each week guest artists performed their latest chart hits.

Dancers moving down the ‘Soul Train Line’

inspired copy-worthy steps and fashion styling.

Piloted by Don Cornelius, the Soul Train  ‘had it all going on!’

Interviewed in 1995, by James McKinley, Jr. of the New York times-

Mr.  Cornelius stated,

“Soul Train was developed as a radio show on television,

It was the radio show that I always wanted and never had.

I selected the music, and still do,

by simply seeing what had chart success.”

…

Added to the music, dance and fashion

was the impressive figure of the host himself.

Tall, handsome, mellow-voiced

and always attired in his signature look

flash fabulous be-spoke suits-

Mr. Cornelius cut an enviable fashion figure.

The Palais Galliera is set to re-open in March, 2015

with a much anticipated retrospective show

on the work of couturière Jeanne-Marie Lanvin (1867 – 1946).

an almost indescribable special something

about a man sporting a well-fitted jacket.

Be it part of an ensemble of matching jacket and trousers,

the effect is evident, a jacket is a definite style maker.

As trees now slowly, gently shed their leaves

layering the ground with shades of

warm autumnal colours,

nature thus signals, with a chill in the air,

that colder weather is set to come.

…

The cooler clime prompts the advent

of one of my favourite fashion looks:

inter-seasonal style.

This summer-transition to-autumn dress

should mimic nature’s own dynamic

response to seasonal change:

rich deep colours, textural interest,

mixed fabrication, asymmetry

and gentle layering.

…

One designer of note

Consuelo Castiglioni

(founder and creative director of the

Italian fashion label Marni)

seems to know instinctively how to create clothing,

which accentuate an ease of change

from summer to autumn wear.

dress elements from each season incorporating:

here’s a Marni look book-back

Fashion and Film: 1920s-inspired costumes from the 2014 film ‘Magic in the Moonlight’

The new Woody Allen romantic comedy

magic in the moonlight, film, poster

Magic in the Moonlight

starring Colin Firth and Emma Stone

probably will not receive an

Oscar nod for screenplay writing.

…

Set during the 1920s in the beautiful

Côte d’Azur (the French Riviera),

it is the wonderful costumes worn,

which are of arresting interest.

Award – winning costume designer Sonia Grande

lent her talents to creating a wardrobe, which is true

to the period:  flamboyant, vibrant, joyful garments

…

Women’s fashion of the ‘roaring ’20s’

had a vibrancy which exuded a sense of ‘joie de vivre’.

Dresses were of light fabrics:  colourful and textural.

Clothing draped loosely, without cling to body form.

It was a period of ‘fashion celebration and liberation’,

as women rid themselves of the restrictive corsets of the

previous fashion era.

Stockings and shoes were equally of fashion fun

in variety of colours and patterns, which coordinated

with the clothing creating a finished look.

Close fit hats, scarves and headbands were also worn

to complement an ensemble and add further style dimension.

…

Men’s wear was all about suiting, often with a waistcoat.

Suits were made from wool, of neutral colours and with pattern.

The cut was more form fit than of past, to create a slim silhouette.

Neck – wear was de rigueur but more of a casual ‘jazzy’ vibe:

ties (bow and long), scarves, ascots were all part of accessorising

the upbeat look of the time.

Hats, as were befitting the season, completed the overall look.

It was the Jazz Age.  The lively tempo of the music

influenced the lively tempo of dress.

The Great War had ended.  There was a desired intent

to find joy, happiness in life; and the fashion spoke to

these wants and aspirations.

I am a fan of Italian designer, Fausto Puglisi.

His ‘bells and whistles’ approach may be OTT for some,

but I do admire the extreme exuberance he brings to

his creations.

…

(image from marieclaire.it):

Fausto-Puglisi_ portrait from maireclaire.itmain_image_object

designer, Fausto Puglisi

…

His work was showcased at the recent exhibition,

The Glamour of Italian Fashion 1945 – 2014

held at the Victoria and Albert Museum (London).

Sr. Puglisi is one to watch of the

next generation of Italian fashion talent.

…

He continues to grow and to explore:

fine tuning conflicting perspectives of creating

bling things with urban edge, which holds appeal

for a select audience with

the reality of designing for a wider demographics

in order to sustain a business.

…

Putting the practicalities aside,

Sr. Puglisi is a design showman and I for one want a front row seat.

…

For the s/s 2015 collection presented opening day at MFW,

there was no shortage of ideas, running the gamut:

from ’60s mod to contemporary urban sass,

from gold high shine to graphic prints

and some others in between.

…

I am love stuck on the shoes.  Sr. Puglisi brought the ‘bling thing’ factor

to slides and gladiator sandals.

With summer 2014 in full -swing

transport by bicycle

is in evidence everywhere-

on country lanes and city streets,

great for getting from here to there.

…

For some cycling is a seasonal fair-weather past time.

For many cycling has become the go-to means of daily transport:

environmentally friendly, cost efficient (no petrol costs),

easy to navigate through road traffic and enjoyable.

…

Yet cycle-fashion presents its own unique sartorial challenges:

how to look effortlessly chic, while pedaling around town:

to dress for ultimate comfort and ultimate style.

What to wear for a bike ride has been a query posed

since the invention of this two wheel transport wonder.

…

The construction of the bicycle, as we now it today,

was perfected by the late 1890s-

thanks to improvement in tire design and metallurgy.

…

For men, the bicycle was quickly embraced as a cost

effective means of transport for work and leisure;

 cycling- dress was relatively straightforward.

Long trousers were worn,

tucked to prevent entanglement in the wheel spokes, as well as

the problem solving and smart – look,  knee length knickerbockers.

…

Given the restrictive nature of women’s clothing during the 19th century,

dressing for cycling presented its challenges for the ladies.

Yet, the pioneering forces of the feminist movement proclaimed

the bicycle as a symbol of emancipation:

a doing-away with the confining corset and bothersome bustle skirt –

for clothing of dress-ease and dress-practicality.

Today, cycle-fashion is as creative and varied as one’s imagination allows.

Legendary couturier Paul Poiret

(image from perfumeprojects.com):

The designer in his studio

…

revolutionised fashion sensibility of the early 20th century.

His clothing celebrated the female body

in designs of comfort, beauty, colour and elegance.

…

He was the first couturier of his time to rid his creations

of the corset, which rigidly shaped the body into a most

unnatural and painful S-shape.

In contrast, his creations were of

movement, glamour, intrigue and sensuality.

…

M. Poiret was a modern thinker of design and enterprise.

In addition to his couture line, he diversified into

the decorative arts and perfumery.

He kept his business concerns ‘all in the family’ –

with his daughters at the helm of each:

Martine, the youngest as head of Atelier de Martine

and Rosine, the eldest as head of Parfums de Rosine.

Atelier de Martine designed several of the bottles for Parfums de Rosine.

Today these perfume bottles are prized collector’s items.

…

 M. Poiret invited leading fashion illustrators of the time

to sketch his creations.

Many of his designs are today readily identifiable from these drawings,

which are as beautiful as the fashion they represented.
