 Fashion-speak

is a living language

ever evolving to describe

au courant style images.

…

And the word is

night flowers

…

Night flowers (n.)

is a term of self – description

used by participants in London’s underground club scene.

Theirs is a world of the extraordinary-

alternatives in music, extreme street-style fashion, non-conformist lifetstyle:

a pronounced mode of self-expression and individuality.

Museum Folkwang (Essen, Germany) |

Karl Lagerfeld – Parallel Contrasts:  Photography – Books  – Fashion

Closes:   11 May 2014

For over 50 years, Karl Lagerfeld has enjoyed great success as a fashion designer. As Creative Director for CHANEL (since 1981) and FENDI (since 1965) he has become one of the most important players in the international fashion world, but has also gained fame as an astute and sharp-tongued aphorist of the everyday. During this period, Lagerfeld has also worked for other fashion houses and launched sensational collections under his own name. Since 1975, alongside fashion, he has been designing jewellery, furniture, musical instruments, books and toys and, in cooperation with musicians, directors and architects, opera and theatre costumes, stage sets and architecture. Karl Lagerfeld is more of a snapshot than a retrospective, showing the man’s seemingly boundless creative energy in all its facets: fashion, drawings and photographs, films and books, product design, advertising.

A single image is often more eloquent than a myriad of words.

photography and illustration at venues in

New York City, London, Dublin and Paris

Don’t forget your passport!

…

New York Historical Society Museum and Library (NYC) |

 Bill Cunningham: Façades
Closes 15 June 2014

In 1968, photographer Bill Cunningham embarked on an eight-year project to document the architectural riches and fashion history of New York City. Scouring the city’s thrift stores, auction houses, and street fairs for vintage clothing, and scouting sites on his bicycle, Cunningham generated a photographic essay entitled Façades, which paired models—in particular his muse, fellow photographer Editta Sherman—in period costumes with historic settings. The photographer donated 88 silver gelatin prints from the series to the New-York Historical Society in 1976, and now, almost four decades later, Bill Cunningham: Façades highlights the historical perspective the photographs suggest—not just of the distant past, but of the particular time in which they were created.

Bill Cunningham (b. 1929) is a fashion photographer for The New York Times.  He is known for his candid photos and has called himself a ‘street photographer’,  probably the pioneer of this genre of fashion imagery.

Queen Sofia Spanish Institute (NYC) |

 Alta Moda by Mario Testino
Closes  29 March 2014

Queen Sofía Spanish Institute, under the chairmanship of Oscar de la Renta, is the first American venue to present ALTA MODA, a series of photographic portraits by acclaimed photographer Mario Testino. Known primarily for his work in fashion magazines, Testino makes a bold departure with this series. Alta Moda—literally “high fashion” in Spanish—documents Peruvians in their vibrantly colored and ornately adorned traditional and festive dress from Cusco, one of the highest mountainous regions of Peru.

'Horst: Photographer of Style' - exhibition, artist, avant garde photography, Deborah Turbeville, fashion photography, photographic artist, Photography

Celebrated American fashion photographer

(image from vogue.it):

Deborah Turbeville

died on Thursday, 24 October 2013.

She was 81 years old.

…

Her talents were recognised as innovative

in execution and form.

She worked with a variety of clients from

magazine editors  at

Vogue, W Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar

to designers/design houses such as

Karl  Lagerfeld, Comme de Garcons

and celebrity figures like the incomparable

Jacqueline Kennedy.

…

During the mid 70s, she gained

international recognition for her

inventive,  bizarre and oft times unsettling images.

…

Hers were visuals which told a narrative;

not of the fashion presented, per se

but of the people portrayed, the setting captured.

This perspective introduced a then avant garde

dimension to depicting fashion photographic images.

…

When once the garments were of sole focus

and the models void of expression –

through the lens of Ms. Turbeville

the models,  the setting,  the mood,

 generated an emotive response.

…

Her photos were  provocative,  broody,  pensive.

Her methods were unconventional:

purposely blurred figures, scratched surfaces.

The finished piece,  arresting:

beckoning/daring the viewer to take another look.

…

Ms. Turbeville’s work has been featured

in museum exhibitions around the world.

Of singular quality, it initiated

a new aesthetic of  the

photographic arts as applied to fashion –

 of mystery,  of intrigue,

of  unsettling beauty.

Creative Madness

At work – Tony Viramontes

…

I spent an evening in the company of

Violetta Sanchez – a favourite muse of the artist and

Dean Rhys Morgan – fashion industry expert who

authored the first comprehensive book on the

oeuvre of Tony Viramontes.

Each spoke of the artist’s frenetic work pace,

uncompromising aesthetics and opinions

and the art which embodied his vision of beauty.

…

Ms. Sanchez recalled from personal reminiscences,

that Viramontes worked like

“a man possessed”.

She spent many long hours in the studio

for he preferred to draw from life,

taking few polaroid photo for later reference.

Yet, she was acutely aware that being in his presence,

as muse, as subject

was something incredible, significant

“… however exhausted you were [it] was

obvious that you were living a moment.”

…

(image from maisonchaplin.com):

Violetta Sanchez by Tony Viramontes

…

Due to his incredible energy, he produced

mountains of beautiful sketches in long, bold, assured strokes –

models were inspired to give maximum effort

They offered “the most of their eccentric selves”,

stated Rhys Morgan.

…

Mr. Rhys Morgan catalogued boxes of Viramontes’ work,

which were left untouched for over twenty years –

stored in the garage of his parents’ home, since

the artist’s death in 1988.

…

The organising of the massive quantity

of Viramontes’ splendid creations,

interviews with those who knew him –

industry colleagues, family, friends

allowed Mr. Rhys  Morgan to piece meticulously together

an informed account of the man and his art.

…

His story

American artist Tony Viramontes had a tragically short but

wonderfully prolific career in fashion illustration.

Born in 1956 in Los Angeles, California

he demonstrated a love of art and drawing from an early age.

He would go on to study fine art and photography at

Parsons School of Design, New York

where he studied drawing

under Steven Meisel, who greatly inspired him.

Meisel is today acknowledged as one of the

fashion industry’s most successful photographers.

It was the result of study with Meisel which

influenced Viramontes’ decision to

channel his art into fashion illustration.

…

Relocating to Paris, the 1980s marked the launch of

Viramontes  stellar career.

He began to draw Parisian haute couture

which appeared on the pages of European fashion magazines.

Viramontes’ work arrested the attention of the fashion industry

at a time when photographs dominated

the fashion images presented.

…

His striking illustrations, portrayed models

in powerful, confident,  aloof  postures;

an attitude that the eye of the camera

couldn’t quite capture –

but the hand of this gifted artist

did and commandingly so.

…

Viramontes experimented with

gender interpretive imagery:

men – softer, androgynous

women – angular, strong

…

(image from 1stdibs.com):

Mike Hill

…

LIsa Rosen

Lisa Rosen, 1985

…

His was a new vision of bold beauty,

which countered accepted images of

fragile femininity and hulking masculinity.

With bold strokes he blurred the line.

…

He would go on to illustrate for

many leading fashion houses and designers, such as:

Gianni Versace, Issey Miyake, Stephen Sprouse,

Givenchy,  Halston, Emmanuel Ungaro

and Valentino who greatly admired Viramontes.

Valentino archived the many drawings which the artist

completed for his label.

…

During the mid 1980s Viramontes would fuse

photography and drawing into single images

which appeared in  British magazines like

The Face and ID.

His work intrigued those in the music industry and

he was commissioned to design album covers for

Janet Jackson, Arcadia and Donna Summers.

…

(images from thegorgeousdaily.com):

…

Viramontes’ work was iconic, signature

recognisable as his uniquely his own.

…

…

A life cut short

Tony Viramontes was diagnosed in 1986 with HIV.

He returned to his parents’ home in Los Angeles.

There he was nursed,  surrounded by family.

He died of Aids in 1988.

He was 31.

The process called stereographic projection,

The ouevre of pioneering photographer

Edward Steichen

(image from servatius.blogspot.co.uk):

Edward Steichen, behind the lens

served as inspiration for the a/w 2013 collection of Mary Katrantzou.

Ms. Katrantzou departed from her known aesthetic

of bold colour and intricate print,

adopting elements of Steichen’s arresting imagery:

monochromic

impressionist

…

Edward Steichen 1879 – 1973

born in Luxembourg, raised in the United states

 studied painting in Paris

but re-directed his focus to photography.

…

Steichen was a man of exhaustive and impressive achievements.

In 1945, he won the Academy Award in Best Documentary

for his naval war film, Fighting Lady.

…

He was the first director of photography at

MOMA (Museum of Modern Art, New York).

…

He collaborated with the legendary

proponent of the photographic arts, Alfred Steiglitz.

…

Steichen is famed for his use of a chiaroscuro approach

of capturing images.  An interplay of light, dark, shadow

to create arresting pictorials of dramatic and painterly effect.

…

To bring added dimension to his art,

Steichen experimented with novel techniques.

He sprinkled water on the lenses to create desired details.

He layered pigments over monochromatic images to incorporate a mist of colour.

Some were of an imagined, dream-like quality.

Without doubt, Steinchen revolutionised the field of photography in

how images were produced, presented and interpreted.
