Teppei Fujita, graduate of the famed Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo,

is the creative force behind menswear brand Sulvam.

He is a fashion disciple of consummate designer Yohji Yamamoto.

Prior to the launch of Sulvam in 2013,

Mr. Fujita worked as a pattern maker for Yohji Yamamoto.

While in this role, he refined his craft for melding fine tailoring with elements of

urban streetwear aesthetics and styling:  a signature Yamamoto characteristic.

…

Mr. Fujita, shows both in Paris and in Tokyo.

He is particularly  keen to further international interest

in Tokyo Fashion Week, which no doubt will be generated by enthusiasm

over his future creations.

His is a design principle of a fashion fluid attitude:

oversized silhouette

tailored details

various textile content / colours

agender aspect (a non-gender specific look)

More than a hint of colour: Yohji Yamamoto, PFW – a/w 2014

02 Sunday Mar 2014

The master of asymmetry, voluminous layering,  Zen-like clothing and

black as statement colour –

Yohji Yamamoto

(image from wwd.com):

offers a collection of colour and print vibrancy,

 a graffiti-esque,  painterly quality

which remains true to the expected of

Mr. Yamamoto’s design aesthetics.

…

The pieces were of exaggerated proportions –

larger than life,

so to the imagery of the prints.

…

Some prints seem reminiscent of a Hieronymus Bosch painting –

though not based on interpreting a narrative of a Bosch work, rather

capturing the intent:

on style … chaos, frenetic energy

on manner … fantastical

on scale … abstract/unreal

…

(image from cargocollective.com):

The Garden of Earthly Delights (detail) 1503/04

Last Judgement (detail) 1504-1508

…

There appears also elements of surrealism akin to Salvador Dali:

(image from tufts.edu):

painting, the persistence of memory, dali

The Persistence of Memory (1931) by Salvador Dali

…

Mr. Yamamoto also features knitwear in this collection,

which he has presented in the past –

and to a similar effect:  body conscious and inventive.

…

Yet it is the liberal use of colour and

the manner in which it translates, which provokes/intrigues.

The intense use colour and imagery ignites

new discussion on Yohji Yamamoto’s design philosophy.

Hobo-chic creation from Junya Watanabe, a/w 2013

American hobo, autumn/winter 2013, hobo chic, hobo history, Junya Watanabe, menswear, patchwork garments

The American hobo was a man without roots.

Never residing too long in any one location.

Happy to find work, committing just long enough

to earn rail fare to the next destination-

wherever that may be.

…

A hobo lead an itinerant existence:

living each day as it comes,

fixed only on the present.

The past a distant memory,

the future in the distant and not foreseeable.

…

With just the clothes worn

and a small parcel containing all possessions

the hobo travelled light –

free to move from town to town

as suited.

…

(image from motherjones.com):

…

For Paris Fashion Week, menswear a/w 2013

designer Junya Watanabe

captured the spirit of

hobo life:

travel

freedom

adventurous

raffish

self-reliant

…

Mr. Watanabe layered patchwork pieces

and accessorised with wool felt bowler hats.

(No suitcases necessary,  wearing all on one’s back.)
