This year’s fashion exhibition summer season is all about the shoes.

In addition to the show-

at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London

the Fashion and Textile Museum (FTM), London

will also host its own shoe exhibition, which chronicles the history of

celebrated British shoe label:  Rayne.

The exhibition highlights a sampling of over 100 shoe models

from the Rayne archive.

Founded in 1885, as a family concern

the Rayne shoe company rapidly became the popular supplier of

bespoke costume shoes for the London theatre community.

By the 1920s a selection of Rayne retail stores had opened and

in 1959 the famous flagship boutique was established at the prestigious

retail local of Old Bond Street, London

…

Rayne shoes became a mark of the “well – heeled” lady.

Worn by Hollywood starlets such as

Elizabeth Taylor, Vivien Leigh, Bridgette Bardot, Diana Rigg

and donned by members of the British royal family-

Rayne shoes were highly sort after footwear:

particularly given that the present British monarch

Elizabeth II wore Rayne shoes on her wedding day.

Another H & M / designer collaboration: meet emerging talent, Eddy Anemian

High street stores / fashion designer collaborations have featured

established creatives, those already with an enthusiastic brand following-

the already recognised money-makers.

Well that has been the expected, that is until now.

…

Running parallel to its media frenzied partnership

with noted American designer Alexander Wang,

high street giant H & M, the Swedish multinational retail-clothing company,

has supported enthusiastically the work of

emerging French designer Eddy Anemian.

…

designer, Eddy Anemian

…

At only 24 years old, Mr. Anemian is currently a student at L’École de la Cambre,

one of the leading art and design schools in Belgium and

he is this year’s recipient of the third annual H & M Design Award.

The award is a cash prize of €50,000 and the opportunity

to present a collection at Mercedes-Benz Stockholm Fashion Week.

…

His collection for H & M is inspired by the 19th century

French neo-classical painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and

contemporary British actress Tilda Swinton in her role as

the wealthy Russian matriarch Emma Recchi in the film I am Love.

wearing a red shift dress

 elegantly/classically attired

…

Presenting  voluminous silhouettes, tiered slash work, and structural elements –

the pieces are beautifully crafted in floral and painterly accented fabrics.

…

What’s next for this for young Anemian?  He is fluctuating between launching

a label or honing his talent under further tutelage.  He states:

“I’m deciding between working for a fashion house in Paris or creating my own label,” he says. “I’m thinking about doing luxurious ready-to-wear or maybe starting a haute couture label.” (quote from teenvogue.com)

Whatever choice he makes, Anemian is set for further success.

Fashion and Film: 1920s-inspired costumes from the 2014 film ‘Magic in the Moonlight’

The new Woody Allen romantic comedy

magic in the moonlight, film, poster

Magic in the Moonlight

starring Colin Firth and Emma Stone

probably will not receive an

Oscar nod for screenplay writing.

…

Set during the 1920s in the beautiful

Côte d’Azur (the French Riviera),

it is the wonderful costumes worn,

which are of arresting interest.

…

Award – winning costume designer Sonia Grande

lent her talents to creating a wardrobe, which is true

to the period:  flamboyant, vibrant, joyful garments

…

Women’s fashion of the ‘roaring ’20s’

had a vibrancy which exuded a sense of ‘joie de vivre’.

Dresses were of light fabrics:  colourful and textural.

Clothing draped loosely, without cling to body form.

It was a period of ‘fashion celebration and liberation’,

as women rid themselves of the restrictive corsets of the

previous fashion era.

…

skirt at knee-length, flirty with side pockets

…

Stockings and shoes were equally of fashion fun

in variety of colours and patterns, which coordinated

with the clothing creating a finished look.

Close fit hats, scarves and headbands were also worn

to complement an ensemble and add further style dimension.

colourful, adorned hat

…

Men’s wear was all about suiting, often with a waistcoat.

Suits were made from wool, of neutral colours and with pattern.

The cut was more form fit than of past, to create a slim silhouette.

Neck – wear was de rigueur but more of a casual ‘jazzy’ vibe:

ties (bow and long), scarves, ascots were all part of accessorising

the upbeat look of the time.

Hats, as were befitting the season, completed the overall look.

…

It was the Jazz Age.  The lively tempo of the music

influenced the lively tempo of dress.

The Great War had ended.  There was a desired intent

to find joy, happiness in life; and the fashion spoke to

these wants and aspirations.
