Summer sunshine season is almost here

and with it comes that urge

to listen repeatedly to, to sing out loud to, to dance freely to

music that generates upbeat in tempo and sentiment.

Cue the smash hit

All About that Bass by music wunderkind

Meghan Trainor,

who at only 21 years old, has worked with

current pop music talents:

Bruno Mars, Solange Knowles, Niki Minaj, Rhianna-

to name a few.

…

Ms. Trainor is a multi-instrumentalist who is inspired by

various musical genres:

soca (Caribbean/calypso), doo-wop, jazz, hip-hop and

crooners of old, such as Frank Sinatra.

…

Her original tune All About that Bass was nominated for Grammy Awards

in three categories:  Favourite Song, Record of the Year, Song of the Year (2014).

The song’s lyrics communicate a theme of embracing/loving oneself as is:

“Writing that song, I was thinking about girls today and how there’s even more pressure to be thin now, because of Instagram and selfies and that constant competition … ”  (quote , Meghan Trainor from meghan-trainor.com)

The message decries  fashion photo-shopped images

as unobtainable ideals of body perfection

and laments the added self-inflicted demand to achieve such goal.

The song encourages consideration of true body perfect as

“all about that bass”:

celebrating what is natural, healthy, strong, robust-

whatever the body measurements.

…

“All About That Bass is to love your body no matter what.”

(quote, Meghan Trainor from meghan-trainor.com)

…

A watch and listen:

Make it a Summer 2015 anthem

All About that Bass

by singer/songwriter Meghan Trainor

 …

A read:

“All About That Bass”
(with highlighted lines)

Because you know I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass… bass… bass… bass

Yeah, it’s pretty clear, I ain’t no size two
But I can shake it, shake it, like I’m supposed to do
‘Cause I got that boom boom that all the boys chase
And all the right junk in all the right places

I see the magazine workin’ that Photoshop
We know that shit ain’t real, come on now, make it stop
If you got beauty, beauty, just raise ’em up
‘Cause every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top

Yeah, my mama she told me “don’t worry about your size”
(Shoo wop wop, sha-ooh wop wop)
She says, “Boys like a little more booty to hold at night”
(That booty, uh, that booty booty)
You know I won’t be no stick figure silicone Barbie doll
So if that what you’re into, then go ‘head and move along

Because you know I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass… Hey!

I’m bringing booty back
Go ‘head and tell them skinny bitches that
No, I’m just playing, I know you think you’re fat
But I’m here to tell you…
Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top

Yeah my mama she told me, “don’t worry about your size”
(Shoo wop wop, sha-ooh wop wop)
She says, “Boys like a little more booty to hold at night”
(That booty booty, uh, that booty booty)
You know I won’t be no stick figure, silicone Barbie doll
So if that’s what you’re into, then go ‘head and move along

Because you know I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass…

You know I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I said I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass…

Because you know I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass… Hey!
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass… Hey!
I’m all about that bass

Newsmaker, but sadly so: Jourdan Dunn is the first Black model in 12 years as solo cover for Vogue UK; 12 Years! Really?!

The February 2015 issue of Vogue UK

has made fashion headline news.

The model Jordan Dunn graces

the cover of the publication.

Yet, why is this a news-worthy item?

…

British born Jourdan Dunn is an accomplished model.

She has featured in campaigns for Burberry, Topshop,

Prada and Victoria’s Secret.

She is beautiful.  She is Black.

She is the first Black model, since Naomi Campbell in 2002,

to be highlighted as solo talent on a Vogue UK cover.

…

Jourdan Dunn

Vogue UK cover, February 2015

…

That a Black model as cover feature of Vogue UK

is cause for discussion is unfortunate:

exemplar of a “the more things change, the more things remain the same.”

The fashion industry continues as quagmire of a fixed physical aesthetic –

one of exclusivity, which yet fails to advance

with full commitment, beauty in all shades and sizes.

…

Ironically, the latest Vogue UK “cover girl”- Jourdan Dunn

has voiced strong criticism of the fashion industry’s apathy

towards promoting diversity:

“I have heard, ‘Oh, we haven’t shown any black models this season.’ So blasé… It’s messed up. Another time my agent told me, ‘They don’t want any black models this season.

(quote by Jourdan Dunn, referenced from glamourmagazine.co.uk)

…

Will the next 12 years see the fashion industry finally embrace

presentation of beauty multiplicity as evidenced in

societies of increased multi-ethnicity?

Are will 2027 be as 2015:  more of the same.

Lupita Nyong’o: Oscar winner named ‘Most Beautiful Person’ by People’s Magazine

the cover feature of the current issue.

~

~

Not always convinced of her incredible physical allure,

Ms. Nyong’o once believed that the ideal image of physical attractiveness,

was that which was the polar opposite of herself, which she defined as:

~

“Light skin and long, flowing, straight hair.”

 “Subconsciously you start to appreciate

those things more than what you possess.”

~

It was her mother who continually told her that she was beautiful.

“And I finally believed her at some point.”, stated Ms. Nyong’o.

~

Ms. Nyong’o is humble in her acknowledgment of the praise

bestowed by the weekly magazine:

~

“It is exciting and just a major, major compliment.”

“I was happy for all the girls who would see me on [it]

and feel a little more seen.”

…  so eloquently stated, Ms. Nyongo.

:D :D (‘democratic demographics’): an applauded and welcomed approach to fashion reporting/styling/images

The fashion industry celebrates visual beauty in two:

the clothing worn and  the body it adorns.

Yet the appreciation expressed of what is body beautiful

is far from all encompassing –

often limited to a specific descriptor of

Euro-centric features, above average height, super-slim physique.

Thus, essentially negating the total scope of beauty,

which exists in the general populace.

…

If beauty is in the “eyes of the beholder’,

surely readers of fashion publications and attendants of runway presentations

would delight in seeing beauty, which mirror aspects of themselves in

models employed

clothing silhouette designed

images displayed

…

There is a public (and to some extent – an industry) hue and cry,

which is steadily gaining momentum –

challenging visuals of beauty, which steadfastly adhere

to historical preferences of an expected and accepted image status quo.

…

Fashion bloggers, are the trailblazers who are

paving the path towards a more inclusive imagery of beauty/style.
