American fashion designer

Steven Alan

is a bi-coastal:  living / working on both the west coast- Los Angeles

and the east coast- New York City, of the continental United States.

Yet, his sartorial aesthetics is definintely not a melding of dress directive

from each of these two fashion specific cities.

Rather, his design slant leans firmly towards an east coast,

NYC cool / carefree style.

designer, Steven Alan

…

Initially a retailer / curator for up and coming designers-

Steven Alan launched his eponymous label in 1999

having no formal training in fashion design.

What he did possess was a trained eye and a clear vision

to create clothing:  starting in menswear and later to include womenswear,

which is of traditional classic casual but with his own interpretive

of distinct, albeit subtle,  modern details.

His iconic reverse seam shirt is example of this creative approach:

Horiyoshi III

is the celebrated Japanese master tattoo artist

who specialises in creating full body tattoos or suits known as

‘Irezumi’.

Born in 1946 and birth named Yoshihito Nakano-

the artist styles himself as

Horiyoshi III

in honour of his late mentor, Horiyoshi I.

Using traditional Japanese tattoo imagery of

– fauna (particularly tigers, snakes, exotic birds, koi fish)

– mythological beasts (Asian dragon, Fu-Dog, the Phoenix)

– flora (lotus, peony, chrysanthemum, cherry blossom)

– Kabuki iconography from classical Japanese theater,

Horiyoshi III designs intricate/ornate ‘Irezumi’ (full body tattoo)

a painful and lengthy process, numbering several years.

Yet, the result is certainly awe-inspiring.

For Horiyoshi III, the instruments of his art are simple:

the completed work:   complex, detailed.

…

In 2009

Steve Yuk, a client of Horiyoshi III

proposed establishing a fashion line of

menswear and womenswear

based on the elegant work of the master tattoo artist.

The following year

the Horiyoshi III clothing label was launched.

…

Handmade silk carves, signature shirts, cashmere knitwear,

edgy denimwear, statement jackets

are featured in Horiyoshi III collections:

In the eye of the beholder: beauty of the window displays at Selfridges & Co, London- flowers in bloom for Apple watch

Apple watch, design work, floral window displays, Selfridges Department Store - London, visual merchandising, window display

Love’s Labour Lost is the title of a comedic play

written by William Shakespeare in 1588.

In it are the words ” … beauty is bought by judgement of the eye … “;

in other words, a person or thing of beauty

is determined by the observer

for beauty is solely in the “eyes of the beholder”.

An acknowledgement as a thing of beauty,

in appreciation of their designs/installations-

is the hoped for response, which visual merchandisers

anticipate from shoppers and the general public.

Visual merchandisers are those talented individuals

responsible for eye-catching in-store and store window displays.

At the moment, the window displays at

Selfridges & Co. , London

are in an autumnal bloom:

bursting with larger than life floral creations

of intricate detail and beauty.

…

…

The magnificient flowers are arresting:

catching and maintaining the attention of passerbys-

inviting closer examination.

Further inspection reveals

that the impressive displays are showcase for

the new Apple watch-

whose small size, in comparison, is dwarfed by the enormity of the flowers.

…

Intricate.   Stunning.   Captivating

Makes one want to take a second look …

and another, and another …

If success for a visual merchandising team is measured by

the sheer delight expressed by shoppers-

then for the individuals at Selfridges & Co.,

the floral display for Apple watch is most definitely

a job “beautifully” done!

Rings and things: Meet “narrative jewellery” designer, Tessa Metcalfe

Via her unusual jewellery pieces, designer Tessa Metcalfe

explores and creates a visual-impact story.

It is a tale set in the London metropolis.

It is one of grit, grime and city dwelling.

It is one of unexpected beauty found in a most peculiar subject:

the urban pigeon.

…

The London city pigeon has become a creature scorned.

Once a fixture in great abundance at landmark points-

such as famed Trafalgar Square,

strident measures have been enacted

to banish the pigeon from such historic sites.

…

(image from panoramio.com):

Yet for native Londoner, Tessa Metcalfe

the feral pigeon is an object of fascination

and source of inspiration for creative output.

Promoted by her own study/work in  taxidermy,

Ms. Metclafe uses the feet of roadkill pigeons

as core element for her pieces.

The feet are cleaned, cast in silver or gold

then set with exquisite gemstones, gently held by the talons:

equally macabre, compelling and beautiful.

Ms. Metcalfe’s pieces have been showcased at London Fashion Week-

There is a beguiling quality to these pieces, which engenders

lingered examination and great appreciation.

Pearl of London ring

The ring is a signature piece of Ms. Metcalfe’s design narrative:

“Capturing the hidden beauty of the city it represents, the pigeon inhabitants protect precious pearls within their gold claws endlessly spinning them in their grasp. The cool smooth [freshwater] pearl stands out inside the gold cage of claws enclosing it. Playfully fitted onto pins the pearl can be turned at your fingertips. This ring encompasses everything I love about my hometown, looking through the dirt in the gutter, finding it holds the beauty of the city.”

Tessa Metcalfe earned a BA Honours degree in Illustration,

University of Brighton.

Her creations have been worn by pop divas Rita Ora and Pixie Lott.

Artist, Yvette Yang is the ultimate international:

Korean-born, Dutch-educated and Paris-based.

She trained in graphic design and developed

a distinct perspective on and medium for

highlighting runway and trend pieces

specific to each fashion season.

…

Since 2007, Ms. Yang has designed Fashion Font,

a typeface presented as an ‘alphabet collage’

which references key pieces of a fashion season’s collections.

She creates her alphabet set biannually in keeping with

an autumn/winter, spring/summer fashion schedule.
