Meg Carroll is an American jewellery designer

who was raised on Long Island, New York

and now lives/works in Lexington, Kentucky.

Of late, she’s keen on two things:

eating Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC)

and creating jewellery from the bone remains.

A bit creatively odd and of intrigue.

…

After consuming a fried chicken meal (wings preferred, courtesy of the Colonel),

the bones are thoroughly cleaned, painted, dipped in copper and gold

to create unique 14 karat gold plated pieces.

Only a limited number of KFC jewellery items were produced,

clearly a ‘special-meal-deal”.

Tel Aviv- based designer Noa Raviv is a young, up and coming talent

whose recent graduate collection, completed at

Shenkar College of Engineering and Design,

has captured the attention of the international fashion community.

The collection, called ‘Hard Copy’,

was featured in a recent edition of Vogue Italia.

The magazine recognised Ms. Raviv as an emerging designer

to watch closely on the fashion industry radar.

‘Hard Copy’ is a collection ‘shaped’ by an interpretive of classical Greek sculpture

and an application of 3D software to create imprecise grid patterns

on tulle and organza fabrics.

The design objective was to produce

“an original object in an era of duplication and replication.”,

which Ms. Raviv successfully accomplished.

Her garments are unique pieces, authentic to an original aesthetic.

Tech -fashion: the dress – design, dress – wear of things to come

Fashion design is about being inventive:

constant contemplation of the next ‘what if’

to take an idea and translate it into a beautiful reality.

…

Technology has penetrated every aspect of existence.

Now fashion innovators have started to channel

technology into dress creations of style and function.

Clothing is set to be elevated to more than just body covering,

but means to communicate, respond to

various stimuli and react to certain environmental factors.

…

Chinese-born, Montreal-based designer Ying Gao is at the forefront of

fashion / technology- wear.

She has designed dresses which respond to the steady gaze of an on-looker.

If stared at for a length of time, tiny motors are activated and parts of the

garment begin to move, the ultimate in ‘eye-catching’ apparel.

Manufactured with photo-luminescent thread, the dresses also

glow in dimmed lighting.

…

…

Wearable Solar, the brain-child company of Dutch designer Pauline van Dongen,

specialises in tech – fashion.

Her concept is the design of garments, which are able to harness solar power

and utilise this natural energy source to power smart devices.

The clothing is lightweight and can charge a smartphone to

50 per cent capability if worn in the sun for over 60 minutes.

During New York Fashion Week (NYFW)-  s/s 2015,

designer of luxury apparel and accessories Rebecca Minkoff,

introduced a jewelery line, which featured a gold chain – link bracelet

that alerts the wearer to texts and mobile calls.

The bracelet makes use of Bluetooth wireless technology.

The collection also boasts a leather bracelet,

which serves as a USB cable for charging mobile phones.

These jewellery pieces will be ready for this year’s holiday gift -giving season.

…

Key to tech-fashion is this interest in clothing that ‘do something’:

interacts, reacts, moves-  of its own accord.

Central Saint Martin’s graduate, designer Amy Winters

creates garments that do just that: respond to environmental stimuli of

sound, sunlight, water.

Her design company Rainbow Winters develops inter-active clothing .

…

…

Design duo Fyodor Podgorny and Golan Frydman (Fyodor Golan)

have taken fashion-tech to the next level by creating a tiered skirt

made of mobile phones which shows static as well as live-feed images.

The images continually change.

For added impact, the skirt is equipped with a special app

which generates colour variations as the wearer moves.

…

(image from wired.co.uk):

…

Yet, although these fashion-tech garments are well ‘tricked out’,

the challenge remains one of  aesthetics:

how to manufacture techno clothing and accessories with beauty appeal.

Karinna Nobbs, senior lecturer of Fashion Brand Strategy

at London College of Fashion, succinctly sums up this fashion/tech dilemma:

“In order for wearable tech to become accepted by the mass market, the design has to fit, but the tech also has to add value to the product and not be a gimmick, which many of the offers to date have been.” (quote from forbes.com)
…

Entertainer/entrepreneur Will.i.am is set to partner with

celebrated British architect Zaha Hadid to create a line of

fashion-tech wear called Fashionology.

…

Zaha-and-William-wired-Michael-Newington-Gray

 Will.i.am (l) and architect/designer Zaha Hadid (r)

(quote/image from wired.co.uk)

…

He has a clear vision of how to address the problem of fashion and tech aesthetics:

“Let’s not think what a technological company would do, let’s bake technology in, but come from the perspective of a fashion house. What would Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent do? What would Chanel do? What type of product would they put technology in to?”

In other words, the fashion should always be first considered

and the technology second in the creative/design process.

…

Although it seems as if there is still a bit left to be desired,

there is ever-increasing consumer interest in wearable technology.

A recent Washington Post article reports

“… 19.2 million wearable devices will be shipped worldwide in 2014, and the number is expected to climb to nearly 112 million by 2018.”

As modern life continues with rapid transitions, incorporating technology into

everyday, practical, useful and beautiful fashion is an inevitability.

Fashion and technology may once have been considered strange bedfellows

but are now readily united.

…

Fashion forward clothing has a new added dimension:  technology.

Action … take one: UK cinematic release of ‘Yves Saint Laurent’

biopic, cinema release, movie - 'Yves Saint Laurent', UK movie release 2014, Yves Saint Laurent - comments on employing Black models, Yves Saint Laurent - tribute

The UK release of the much anticipated biopic

‘Yves Saint Laurent’

opens this Friday, 21 March 2014.

The movie is one of two films out this year,

which chronicles the life of this celebrated fashion designer:

the good, the bad and the ugly.

…

This first to be released –  ‘Yves Saint Laurent’  (UK opening 21 March)

has the blessing of Pierre Berge

(M. Saint Laurent’s partner in business and life),

who extensively collaborated with the movie’s production team.

The rival film ‘Saint Laurent’,  due out later this year,

and not endorsed by M. Berge,

is backed by Kering the business concern, which

ironically owns the Saint Laurent brand .

…

The very beginning

Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent

was born in Oran, French Algeria – 1936.

He was the eldest of three,

having two younger sisters and mother

who all would encourage his artistic sensibilities.

…

Although there was this familial support for

his budding design interests,

he was terribly bullied at school for being:

creative, bespectacled, studious,

slight and lacking athletic prowess.

It is reported that he once said,

“I didn’t have what it took to be a boy.”

…

He certainly had all of what it took to become a fashion great:

an inventive vision

an appreciation / an understanding of the female form

a talent for creating clothing of a seductive, modern quality

a defiance which challenged the norm /  the expected.

…

The beginning of an illustrious career

He began his design career under the tutelage

of French couturier Christian Dior.

So impressed was M. Dior with the young designer

that he named Yves Saint Laurent as his successor.

A position which M. Saint Laurent fulfilled in 1957

at the young age of 21.

From that starting point he proceeded to make

an indelible mark on the canvass of fashion design.

..

The iconic piece

Coco Chanel empowered women in wearing trousers,

and it was Yves Saint Laurent who

deftly adapted menswear lines to a woman’s body

in designing of minimalist,  androgynous,  trouser fashion –

entrez … Le Smoking.

(image from pure trend.com):

Le Smoking by Yves Saint Laurent, 1966

…

His private life was however,  fraught with incredible challenges:

drug abuse/addiction, sexual promiscuity, mental health issues.

As with many exceptional creatives, he was somewhat

of a tortured soul – giving of his art, but not of himself …

“I’m so secluded.  Very alone.”

…

Yet from the depth of his inner contemplative space,

Yves Saint Laurent created fashion magic.

He remains one of the industry’s  greatest luminaries.

His designs changed the landscape of

women’s wearable clothing and couture fashion.

His, was a modern perspective:

forward-looking in design as well as in attitude.

He is recognised as the first major designer

to use Black as well as Asian models

for runway presentation and muse reference.

…

Alas, the under-representation of models of colour remains

an issue of discussion and debate within the fashion industry.

Clearly, M. Saint Laurent was light years ahead of the curve …

Hedi Slimane –  current creative director of the YSL label –

please take note.

…

Yves Saint Laurent   …  on working with Black models

…

It is of no surprise that M. Saint Laurent’s life story

is focus for two concurrent film ventures.

His fashion/design legacy is unparalleled.

Long may it continue to

 captivate,  inspire,  inform
