Suede

is a type of leather with a napped (raised, fuzzy) surface.

Traits of  thinness and suppleness allows for its versatility as

clothing fabrication.

Once traditionally used as

material for attire worn during the cooler clime,

suede is now applied as fabric for all seasons.

…

It is textural.

It can be  dyed to yield a full range of fashion fun colours.

It can be constructed into all types of core clothing pieces:

trousers, tops, skirts, coats, jackets.

It is a fashion fabrication perennial:  suitable wear for all seasons.

…

For 2015 and beyond

for spring warmth to winter chill wear-

the suede scene has become fashion wardrobe de rigueur

featuring creative colour and singular silhouette.

A pink colour story for autumn / winter 2015

In the pink

Beauty, sensitivity, romance, gentleness, delicacy-

are but a few words in the contemporary lexicon

ascribable to the colour pink.

Yet, there there are a few variants to the

“pink colour word history”.

…

Reference to a colour pink is traceable to ancient times

and certainly pink as a vibrant pigment colour,

(a blending of red and white)

was much used in religious painting

during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

…

Consider the use of pink pigment on manuscript leaves from

by famed 15th century Dutch minaturist painters

The Limbourg Bothers –

Adoration of the Magi

…

By the late 17th century, “pink”  as a colour word

was utilised in the English language.

It’s derivation stems from

the name of the Dutch flower “pinken”.

…

Yet,  it is the strong gender alignment of the colour,

which is of particular interest.

Originally in European culture

pink was more regarded as a masculine colour

due to its hue relationship with the “murderous”  colour red.

Whereas blue was thought of as a colour more relatable to women as

it is the traditional colour worn by the Virgin Mary in artworks of her “likeness”.

…

By the mid 20th century, the colour gender alignment

had shifted with pink most strongly identified with women and

blue most connected with men.

The evolution of pink as colour statement continues.

Today it seems more a colour of gender neutrality.

…

Pink is also a colour charged by political affiliation.

It has come to be widely used as word reference to

leftist / communist leanings.

In current vernacular, Latin American countries with

leftist political heads of state are known as the “Pink Tide”  nations.

…

An emotive colour with a fascinating history trail

pink is set to be an impact colour for autumn / winter 2015.

The green colour story was runway legible for autumn / winter 2014.

As a signature hue,  green indicates balance, harmony, positivity and hope.

It is an uplifting colour, which is symbolic of nature,

rejuvenation, optimism and growth.

Following top positioned blue,

green (shared with red) ranks as the second most popular colour.

…

For autumn / winter 2014 sartorial colour choice,

Think pink for Spring 2014

colour characteristics, spring 2014, the colour pink - spring 2014

Spring is a fickle season –

some days gloriously warm, in anticipation of summer

other days disappointingly chilly, in memory of winter just past.

Yet one thing remains constant … the power of pink.

Whatever the spring temp, dress in shades of pink

for a fashion weather vane – point in the right direction

…

The pull of pink may have something to do with its colour meaning.

Pink is a secondary colour mix of

red (action, passion, energy)  and

white (wholeness, completeness).

It is said to represent unconditional love, compassion, reassurance.

Pink has a soothing, calming effect on the senses.

It signals hope and positivity.

This Spring make sure  ‘to be in the pink’

More than a hint of colour: Yohji Yamamoto, PFW – a/w 2014

The master of asymmetry, voluminous layering,  Zen-like clothing and

black as statement colour –

Yohji Yamamoto

(image from wwd.com):

offers a collection of colour and print vibrancy,

 a graffiti-esque,  painterly quality

which remains true to the expected of

Mr. Yamamoto’s design aesthetics.

…

The pieces were of exaggerated proportions –

larger than life,

so to the imagery of the prints.

…

Some prints seem reminiscent of a Hieronymus Bosch painting –

though not based on interpreting a narrative of a Bosch work, rather

capturing the intent:

on style … chaos, frenetic energy

on manner … fantastical

on scale … abstract/unreal

…

There appears also elements of surrealism akin to Salvador Dali:

The Persistence of Memory (1931) by Salvador Dali

…

Mr. Yamamoto also features knitwear in this collection,

which he has presented in the past –

and to a similar effect:  body conscious and inventive.

…

Yet it is the liberal use of colour and

the manner in which it translates, which provokes/intrigues.

The intense use colour and imagery ignites

new discussion on Yohji Yamamoto’s design philosophy.

Czeslaw Milosz, December 1 - poem, poems, poet

December 1st

The vineyard country, russet, reddish, carmine-brown in this season. A blue outline of hills above a fertile valley. It’s warm as long as the sun does not set, in the shade cold returns. A strong sauna and then swimming in a pool surrounded by trees. Dark redwoods, transparent pale-leved birches. In their delicate network, a sliver of the moon. I describe this for I have learned to doubt philosophy And the visible world is all that remains.

‘Tartanology’: check it out!

22 Friday Nov 2013

Tags

'tartanology', autumn/winter 2013, Fausto Puglisi, history of tartan, tartan, tartan - wear, womenswear

Tartan

a woven material, usually of wool

distinctive by stripes of varying width and colours.

The stripes are positioned vertically: the warp

and horizontally: the weft.

The resulting pattern appears as squares intersected by stripes.

The pattern is called the sett and

the tartan is the repeating of setts.

…

Tartan patterning has evolved into

an iconic image of Scottish identity.

…

(image from aberdeenshire.gov.uk):

…

Origins

During excavations in northwest China

of an ancient city (Qizilchoqa) in existence over 2,000 years ago –

archeologist unearthed mummified remains of

four men and two women.

All redheaded; all dressed in tartan patterned cloth.

It is believed that they were of a migrating Celtic tribe.

The discovery signified that the Celts (600 BC – 50 AD) wove cloth in a

chequer-patterned design:  tartan.

…

An early sample of this patterning, specific to Scotland

dates to the 3rd century AD.

Named the Falkirk Tartan, after the Scottish town of Falkirk

where it is believed to have originated –

it is displayed in the collection of the

National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.

…

remnant of the Falkirk Tartan

…

A German woodcut, 1631-  of Highland mercenaries

in the employ of the Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus,

depicts the men wearing tartan kilts.

This is further evidence of tartan patterning in Scottish dress.

…

(image from scotshistoryonline.co.uk):

German woodcut, 1631

…

Tartan Identification

It seems that an initial indicator of tartan as a sort of

“clan uniform”

occurred in 1746 at the Battle of Culloden.

…

The confrontation was the last in the military efforts

of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (The Young Pretender)

to assert his claim to the English crown.

Grandson of the deposed Stuart king,

the Catholic James II –

Prince Charles as his father before him

was unsuccessful in his attempts.

…

(image from queenofscots.co.uk):

Prince Charles Edward Stuart attired TT (totally tartan)

…

Of specific interest for ‘tartanology’ (the study of tartan)

is that Highland combatants at Culloden wore

tartan kilts of patterning similar to others from

the same or closely neighbouring communities –

probably more a general district tartan pattern

than specific family clan patterns.

File:The Battle of Culloden.jpg

The Battle of Culloden, by David Morier (1705 -1770)

…

The Victorians and Tartan

Queen Victoria and her consort Prince Albert

loved visiting Balmoral Castle, which they had built in 1856

on the royal estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

When there, they enjoyed wearing Highland dress and

decorating rooms in tartan prints.

…

(image from tartansauthority.com):

A Balmoral Castle interior showing tartan everywhere.

…

Ever industrious, Prince Albert even designed

a pattern known as the Balmoral Tartan.

the Balmoral Tartan (Royal), 1853

designed by Prince Albert

…

In response to the royal interest in things tartan,

many Victorians followed suit-

fashioning themselves and their interiors in tartan.

…

Today tartan is an extremely popular print,

seen in runway presentation

and translated into street style.

…

For his a/w 2013 womenswear collection

Italian designer Fausto Puglisi

offers yet another example of the international appeal

of tartan- fashion.

His interpretation is a strong, bold statement –

well in-keeping with tales of the fearless Highlanders.

He recalled the important day of his entrance interview

arriving at CSM, noting the fashion parade of students

and there was he

“… looking like a tramp and nearly s—-ing himself … “

Yet without ever having planned on a career in fashion

he accepted the offer from CSM.

…

He immediately felt a bit out of his depth:

“(having been) involved in furniture (design) suddenly

involved with the human body was challenging.”

Though experiencing a sense of being thrown into the deep end

he didn’t sink

but floated instead

then swam.

…

He credits CSM with encouraging him

“… to form an opinion, to have a point of view …

 to have a critical eye … “

…

He continued to develop his skill for colour use and

screen printing during a time when

“print wasn’t on people’s wavelength.”

Clearly a risk-taker, a forward-thinker

he held fast to his ‘print’ point of view,

which later was the making of his success.

…

Graduating in 2002 and at only 24 years old

and truly a relative fashion ingenue –

Jonathan’s first collection made the cover of British Vogue.

He believes that his “naivete maybe sparked a note with people.”

He suggests that, “fashion people liked me (because) at the time

my clothing was accessible.”

…

Although greeted with almost instantaneous high praise,

Jonathan was troubled by the dilemma of

“being a brand and wanting to try new things …

(it is) finding the right balance between (satisfying) the customer

and (satisfying) your expression as a designer.”

…

This lead to a process of knowledge acquisition:

of self,  of concept,  of language

What was it that he wanted his clothes to communicate?

As Jonathan eloquently stated,

“fashion is a story to tell, a feeling …”

…

To accomplish further how to write his own

fashion language and support it,

practicalities need to be considered.

He worked gratis for Pucci, Christian LaCroix, Alexander McQueen

“…to just learn…

how the industry works,

how (to build) a viable business …

how to (move) from a tiny bedroom operation

to being a company.”

And all this he did.

…

Today Jonathan Saunders is an

internationally renown fashion designer.

For several years he showed in New York but is now happily back

showing his collections at London Fashion Week.

He is known for his unique and innovative use of

colour, print and traditional methods of silk screening.

He states,

“I’m a colourist (using) colour to tell a story and have

the consumer(s) interpret it in their own way …

clashing (colours) gets me excited … colour exists already

(it is) how to combine colours (to make)

a new colour palette.”

…

Although technology can afford him

inventive methods of creating his textiles,

Jonathan still uses a traditional method of silk screening.

He finds, “a joy in the mistakes of (things) slightly crude.”

It seems a distinct and wonderful quality of beauty in

the perfection of imperfection

of which he greatly appreciates.

His fashion philosophy rests comfortably with

the organic, the natural, the fundamentals.

…

What’s next for Jonathan?

Further collaborations?

… only if there is something new to learn from the partnership.

…

New textiles?

… he tries to create a new textile each season.

…

Words of wisdom?

he states:

“… none of us really know what we’re doing.”

…

I’d  heard Jonathan speak at interview before –

at the Vogue Fashion Festival 2013.

I liked him then and like him now …

even more.

…
