Horiyoshi III

is the celebrated Japanese master tattoo artist

who specialises in creating full body tattoos or suits known as

‘Irezumi’.

Born in 1946 and birth named Yoshihito Nakano-

the artist styles himself as

Horiyoshi III

in honour of his late mentor, Horiyoshi I.

Using traditional Japanese tattoo imagery of

– fauna (particularly tigers, snakes, exotic birds, koi fish)

– mythological beasts (Asian dragon, Fu-Dog, the Phoenix)

– flora (lotus, peony, chrysanthemum, cherry blossom)

– Kabuki iconography from classical Japanese theater,

Horiyoshi III designs intricate/ornate ‘Irezumi’ (full body tattoo)

a painful and lengthy process, numbering several years.

Yet, the result is certainly awe-inspiring.

For Horiyoshi III, the instruments of his art are simple:

In 2009

Steve Yuk, a client of Horiyoshi III

proposed establishing a fashion line of

menswear and womenswear

based on the elegant work of the master tattoo artist.

The following year

the Horiyoshi III clothing label was launched.

Handmade silk carves, signature shirts, cashmere knitwear,

edgy denimwear, statement jackets

are featured in Horiyoshi III collections:

a melding of exquisite Japanese tattoo imagery

Mark your diary! : a restrospective look at the ouevre of contemporary artist Jeff Koons at the Pompidou Centre- Paris

'Jeff Koons: A Retrospective', art exhibitions - 2015, conceptual art, conceptual artist, Jeff Koons, Pompidou Centre- Paris

The oeuvre of contemporary American artist Jeff Koons

presents a puzzlement:

is it work avant garde-   of art historical impact and import

produced by a masterful genius? ; or

is it kitsch, successfully marketed by a masterful genius?

…

Until 27 April 2015, the Pompidou Centre, Paris

will host the first retrospective exhibition held in Europe

on the work of Jeff Koons.

The show includes 150 objects, which includes many of his iconic pieces,

displayed in chronological arrangement.

It examines the breadth of Mr. Koons’ controversial career,

which oft times erupted in sensational responses, headlines

and purchase prices.

(The exhibition travels next to Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain from 12 June

until 27 September 2015).

…

Whatever one’s reaction towards the artist or his work-

Jeff Koons is arguably one of the most widely known artist of our time.

In November 2013, his piece Balloon Dog (Orange) sold at a

Christie’s New York auction, to an undisclosed telephone buyer,

for the amount of $58.4 million.

The astronomical purchase price rocketed Balloon Dog (Orange)

into a rarefied space as the most expensive amount paid

for a single art piece by a living artist.

Jeff Koons secured the status of celebrity artist extraordinaire.

…

(image from qz.com):

 Large scale, mirror-polished stainless steel

also in red, magenta, blue and yellow.

…

The Balloon Dog sculptures are part of Koons’ Celebration Series,

started in 1994 and includes monumental sized works of sculpture and painting.

…

Yet, Jeff Koons is not a recent sensation to the international art scene.

Born in 1955 (York, Pennsylvania), he later studied painting at the

School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Maryland Institute College of Art.

During the 1980s, he garnered much attention as a conceptual artist with

his Equilibrium Aquarium Series (1985),

which featured one to three Spalding basketball(s)

suspended in a tank filled with distilled water.

…

One Ball Total

…

(image from moma.org):

jeff koons, three basketballs

Three Ball 50/50 Tank:  Two Dr. J. Silver Series, One Wilson Supershot

…

The work is said to represent an existence held in abeyance:

one of inactivity.

Yet, the use of the suspended basketballs may suggest

the potential for eventual transition to activity.

There is also an analogy to life in utero-

of quietude in a contained, calm  environment

before all is shattered and overwhelmed by noise.

The artist once stated, “I wanted to keep it a very womb-like situation with (the) water.” (quote from tate.org)

…

The Equilibrium Aquarium Series also included pieces in bronze cast:

a life boat and an aqualung.

(image from whitneymuseum.org):

jeff koons, equilibrium series, bronze lifeboat

Lifeboat  (1985)

…

(image from hyperallergic.com):

Jeff koons, equilibrium series, bronze aqualung

Aqualung  (1985)

…

The “inflatable sculptures” of the Celebration Series,

a motley collection of items:

balloons, lifeboats, basketballs, aqualung

references air-  the taking in of air, expansion from air,

its ability to give form, its capacity to give life.

According to the artist, “(t)he reason that I enjoy things that involve air is they’re a symbol of us. We’re breathing machines, we’re inflatables, we take air.” (quote from afterall. org)

…

In his work, Koons uses readily recognizable objects

and items of everyday use, the “readymades”.

Here Koons demonstrates influence from

French conceptual artist Marcel Duchamp (1887 – 1968).

Duchamp shocked the the art world

with use of random objects of no particular aesthetic appeal.

Any attraction to the art work is not then an attraction

in response to visual beauty, but rather one

which demands engagement of intellect.

…

Ultimately, is this what Jeff Koons’ work is all about:

a bold challenge to what we classify as art and interpret as art?

His pieces certainly ignites and fuels this debate

…

(image from gothanmagazine.com):

jeff koons, hoover cleaners

Vacuum cleaners displayed in plexiglas cases (1981 – 1987)

another example of Jeff Koons’ use of mundane objects-

the “readymades”

…

During the late 1980s, Koons created the Banality Series,

which too caused uproar, both good and bad.

Expert at understanding the power of the media to generate a buzz,

Koons took out several several full-page adverts, in various periodicals

to announce the series.

He was the key figure in these media images-

presenting himself in several guises:

as a teacher in a classroom aside a blackboard with written statements

such as “Exploit the Masses” and “Banality as Savior”;

as a womanizer surrounded by bikini-clad women and as

the “propagator” of the banal, which shows Koons with two pigs.

The media campaign was of Koons  poking fun at himself.

The images used were based on opinions, which circulated about him.

…

(image from designboom.com):

The Banality Series included the famed porcelain figurine

of the King of Pop- Michael Jackson and his pet monkey- Bubbles.

(from brainmagazine.fr):

…

Koons also created several sculptural works made from plaster

and staged with a large, blue, glass ball.

These included massive pieces of Greco-Roman reference

and true to the spirit of the “readymades”-

a row of mailboxes elevated on buckets.

(images from design-milk.com):

…

Jeff Koons prides himself on creating art,

which speaks to an audience of broad spectrum.

His work makes use of imagery from popular culture and of things familiar .

Therein lies an enthusiasm for his pieces,

which happily for the artist, has proved quite lucrative.

'Horst: Photographer of Style' - exhibition, fashion exhibitions 2014, fashion photography, Horst P. Horst, Mark your diary!, modernist photographers, photography - images in light/shadow, Victoria and Albert Museum

This autumn the Victoria and Albert Museum, London

presents a comprehensive exhibition on the oeuvre

of famed photographer Horst P. Horst, (1906 – 1999)

…

(image from vam.ac.uk):

…

German born, Horst studied in Hamburg and

after becoming increasingly absorbed by the

avant garde art movement, he moved to Paris.

There he undertook architectural study

under the tutelage of Le Corbusier.

…

Horst’s interest centred on a development of modernist expression.

Yet, his artistic interpretation was not to be fulfilled through

architecture, as was his initial ambition.  Horst became acquainted with renown

Vogue photographer, Baron George Hoyningen-Huene.

He became Hoyningen-Huene’s assistant and succumbed to the appeal

of photography, the art form through which he would eventually gain

international recognition.

…

Horst’s first photo credit appeared in French Vogue, 1931.

By 1932, with his photographs featured in British Vogue, Horst P. Horst was

on a career ascent.  The association with Vogue lasted his entire working life,

which spanned an impressive sixty years (1931 – 1991).

…

During the 1930s and 1940s he photographed

fashion luminaries such as Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli and

fashion model extraordinaire Lisa Fonssagrives.

Many of Hollywood glitterati, Betti Davis, Marlene Dietrich

and Ginger Rogers to name a few, were also subject of his work.

His images were composed from an eclectic array and combination of influences:

“His aesthetic range throughout the 1930s and (1940s) was vast, encompassing elements of Greek classicism, Baroque romanticism, Hollywood studio photography, trompe l’oeil, and film noir; he also ventured into the avant-garde, revealing such influences as the Bauhaus and Surrealism.”  (from vogue.com)

The photos created had a chiaroscuro quality of boldly contrasting light and

dark in an intricate play of shadow.  The effect produced was of profound

tonal aspect.

…

Horst immigrated to the United States and received his American

citizenship in 1943.  He would go on to serve in the U.S. army,

working as a photographer.

He photographed the then President of the United States Harry S. Truman.

and was granted the distinct honour of photographing

every post-war U. S.  First Lady.

…

In the later part of his career, he photographed famed rockers of the

music scene:  Duran Duran and Mike Jagger.

His love of his art was simply an expression of his love of life.  He once stated,

“I like taking photographs, because I like life.

(and) I love photographing people best of all,

because most of all I love humanity.”

Self portrait, 1908 – 1910

Kazimir Malevich

…

was a Russian painter whose work was influenced by Cubist aesthetics,

as introduced by the artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.

…

Cubism was an art movement, which originated in the 1910s

with Picasso and Braque interpretive of a breaking up and re-assembling

of a given subject in basic geometric shapes and abstract form.

The rendering is meant to be appreciated from various focal perspectives,

thus generating a sense of dimensionality and dynamism.

…

Cubist sensibilities and abstract imagery

in interpreting how images are viewed and depicted

resonated with Kazimir Malevich,

who took geometric abstraction another step in his creating of

Suprematism.

…

In Suprematism, a term he coined in 1915,

Malevich was concerned with expressing purity:

works free from political or social innuendos

composed of simple geometric forms.

Mark your diary! – BoyHood: a must-see cinematic feat

'docu-fiction', BoyHood - movie, Ellar Coltrane, experimental cinema, Richard Linklater- writer/director, summer activities for 2014

Never has the cinematographic arts industry

naturally, honestly, intuitively

presented a movie which chronicles

a chapter of a life story spanning twelve consecutive years.

A significant span of a young boy’s life from age 6 to 18 –

portrayed in real time,

resulting in over a decade of filming as

he develops from a boy to a young man.

…

BoyHood

is the artistic triumph of filmmaker Richard Linklater.

It’s an emotive, experimental, ‘docu-fiction’, innovative piece of movie making.

Mr. Linklater has surely offered something special to the film-making craft.

…

The same actors appear over the twelve years of filming.

They age as nature intended.

The beauty of the film seems to be just that:

an unfolding of events – naturally intended.

Nothing elaborate, unbelievable, out of the ordinary –

scenes of life, which we all experience to some degree or another,

which pulls emotions of varying intensity.

…

The story centres  around a split family unit

Patricia Arquette plays the single mother

Ethan Hawke plays the returned ‘AWOL’ father

Lorelei Linklater plays the eldest child

and

Ellar Coltrane plays the boy of whose ordinary life

is subject of an extraordinary contribution to the art of cinema.

..

BoyHood

is now open in cinemas across the U.K. and internationally

…

A brief word on the film from writer/director Richard Linklater

and the star of the film, Ellar Coltrane

Mark your diary! The BP Portrait Award 2014, National Portrait Gallery – London

A Man with a Plaid Blanket - winning portrait, BP Portrait Award - 2014, National Portrait Gallery - London, Thomas Ganter - winning artist

“The camera cannot lie, but it can be an accessory to untruth.”

is attributed to Harold Evans,

British journalist and former editor of The Sunday Times (1967 – 1981).

So it is that today, the camera and film technology has advanced as to be able

to render an invented truth, one bearing little likeness to the person shown.

…

In the beginning …

Yet, during the late 19th century

the introduction of photographic film in camera use

developed by the American George Eastman,

(inventor of the Kodak camera)

revolutionized the mass appeal and use of photographic images.

Photographs became the quick, instantaneous method of capturing an indivdual

in a moment of existence.

…

At that time, it seemed the purpose of camera and photo were crystal:

the camera …  exposed, isolated, arrested an expression in an instant.

the photo …  a genuine product, an honest rendering

…

And of the painted portrait …

As a result of the immediate results achieved by the camera,

our centuries – old acceptance of the painted portrait

as an image, which could singularly uncover

genuine glimpses of personality had waned.

The allure of the photographic portrait had taken hold.

…

The whole truth and nothing but …

Yet, the camera can lie and the photo making process manipulated

to ensure an idealised / flawless result.

The immediate ability to snap, crop, photoshop images

to obtain a false beauty, leads to querying over the

the photographic portrait as 20/20.

…

The quote by Harry Evans can be applied to this

potential for deception, of possible manipulation.

Given the achievements of 21st century photographic technology,

the camera and its enhanced photo product can be of questionable reliance.

…

A general skepticism of photographic portraiture

may well be an instrument for

a defined resurgence of interest in portraiture painting:

a likeness rendered by the process of mixing paints and studied observation

over the immediacy of an image ‘caught on film’.

…

These two media for portraiture:  painting and photography

(sculpture excepted in this piece)

if executed well and honestly, can bare raw

a sitter’s mood, emotion, thought.

Yet, which is more successful at accomplishing this objective?

Which is truer … that procured through the eyes of the lens

or that seen by the naked eye?

…

The annual BP Portrait Award

receives submissions of portrait paintings from around the world.

Many are of the works are of ordinary people,

some are of public figures.

In its 35 years at the National Portrait Gallery – London

the competition has become a high point of the art social calendar.

This year’s finalists were chosen from over 2,000 entrants,

with the winner receiving prize money of £30,000.

…

Given the overwhelming responses from

both artist entrants and the general public,

there is definitely a massive interest in and appeal of

the painted portrait:

a window to glimpse not a solitary instant –

but a combination of moments.

Possibly then,  a more whole / natural / truer  picture of the sitter?

Maybe.

 …

This year’s winning BP Portrait Award

was submitted by German artist

Thomas Ganter.

his painting is entitled:

A Man with a Plaid Blanket

BP portrait winner 14 by thomas ganter_75805071_ganter_pa

…

Mr. Ganter elaborates on his choice of sitter and his work’s message/symbolism:

“After being in a museum, I saw a homeless man and was stunned by a similarity: the clothes, the pose, and other details resembled what I just saw in various paintings,” he said.  “However, this time I was looking at a homeless person wrapped in a blanket and not at the painting of a saint or noble in their elaborate garment.By portraying a homeless man in a manner reserved for nobles or saints, I tried to emphasise that everyone deserves respect and care.  He continues,
“Human dignity shouldn’t be relative or dependent on socio-economic status.”

…

In addition to Mr. Ganter’s painting

52 other entries are on display

in the exhibition.

…
