…
The astonishing aspect is that
Mr. Wiltshire completes his work
wholly from memory.
…
His life story is as remarkable
as his artistic gifts.
He was born in London, 1974.
By the age of three, he was diagnosed
with a severe autism.
He would not speak his first words
until the age of five.
…
He lived in his own silent bubble –
uncommunicative, unresponsive.
Yet, there was one thing he did unceasingly
and with focused concentration –
he drew-
with pen in hand and paper
always at the ready.
This was his form of
communication and creativity.
…
From a young age
he rendered images of
his native London
and favourite vehicles –
all with with striking precision.
…
In an attempt to encourage speech
his teachers withheld his drawing tools,
and promoted him to request their return.
Gradually, he did
asking for his pens and paper –
first words uttered.
…
Mr. Wiltshire would eventually progress
to successfully defy the odds:
graduating in 1998 from the prestigious
City and Guild London Art School;
and receiving an MBE
(Member of the British Empire) in 2006
for his contribution to British arts.
…
He has traveled the globe,
visiting cities, mentally recording features
of their urban landscape
and recognisable landmarks.
Committing all to memory,
producing astonishingly vibrant images.
…
His is a beautiful mind.
